If you're going to the eye on the same side as your elbow yes the nose will be in the way. If you're going across its a perfect fit. The nub of the ulna sticks out going sideways and will fit in there a lot better than your elbow going down, which is a lot fatter than that nub at the end of your sideways elbow.

I believe that that kind of strike has far less weight directed on that striking point. But I'm no physicist. Thats not why it was banned, the discussion is generally centered around the force of the blow. The eyeball thing is just something I was musing on.
