I pull butterfly and immediately get the X-Guard. I do not understand why I do not sweep him here. The guy did have a good base, but I have swept big strong guys before. Did I not stretch him far enough? Was his ankle to far from my head? PLEASE HELP!

You didn't control his far ankle (right leg). That is why he whipped out of it so easy. next time control that outside leg with your left hand, when they stand straight up like that, scissor your leg, kicking you right leg aiming behind him and your left leg going in front of him. Another good one when they stand is just get up and push back for a single. , but always control that outside leg.

^ actually no that's not necessary at all and would prevent him from using his hand not underhooking the left left leg to get a meaningful grip, you should have stretched him out more though and you need to keep those hooks tight so you can follow his leg if he tries to kick out like that. When the guy stands straight up like that though shift your bottom hook to his ankle and turn your hips towards him while you push his ankle out for the sweep. I also like to control the far sleeve and stretch them out as far as possible and if they arent really flexible you get the sweep right there because they have no base on that side, otherwise from the point you can stand up in base and get the single. Also another one that I like after you have them stretched out is to push the leg you are underhooking over your head and get butterfly hooks from the back and then grab the belt and push your hooks away and they fall right into your lap, make sure that you have a grip on the far pant with the hand the was underhooking the leg immediately when you push there leg over your head though or they can just step around and you lose the position.

I'm by no means an expert on the x-guard, but something i like to do is take my left hand (the non-underhooking arm) and grab his far sleeve, and feed it to my hand that is underhooking his leg.

It just seemed in your case though that you needed to transition to a different sweep, since he had a solid base.

to me it just looks like you werent flexing your hooks against his leg. he shouldnt be able to kick out like that when you are using both legs. you should always be extending the guy to some extent in x-guard.

you definitely dont need to grab the far ankle. it actually can help the guy balance in a way.

but a white belt pulling x guard at all is really impressive

What kind of sweep were you attempting? You had the X-guard scissor sweep to his back all day long, that's the #1 sweep you should be going for when the guy stands up like that and bases out. If the guy bends forward or leans towards your head or feet then switch to something else.

And as someone else said, you need strong pressure with your hooks. If he can kick out like that it means you don't have enough pressure on your hooks (and probably not enough on his near leg).

Nothing to do with the topic, but about your sig - First time I had sex I couldn't believe how awesome it was, pussy > hand every time.

Just out of curiosity is it common at your school for white belts to pull butterfly guard and use X guard?

They do teach it. I'm pretty much the only white belt I know that does it.

There is a purple belt at our school who has a killer butterfly guard. We have a similar build (short legs. Big thighs, barrel chest, about 5'9 170). I have had much more success with it then full, spider de Liva etc.

That kid was all business. Just like his haircut.

i have never seen someone with both cross hooks and the underhook on the leg not successfully sweep someone. that being said good basics shown from the little i watched of that video

U had it u just kept your knees bent you need to lock the X then straighten out your legs stretching out his base then he will have no base or balance

Keep your ass/lower back on the mat...it looks like you were almost trying to scissor his legs to keep him in your xguard and that's why you were lifting your lower back. Keeping the hooks live is important, but its extending your legs and spreading out his base that keeps him in your guard/making a sweep possible. His hip adductors should have no chance vs your legs.

The real problem is that you didn't need to to X guard at all. The way your opponent was approaching your butterfly you, from my perspective, had a very good opportunity to hit a standard hook sweep. Even if you missed it you probably would have ended up on the back or in a single leg since he didn't seem to have much interest in overhooking.

Not to say X-Guard is too advanced for a white belt or anything (i'm certainly not an X-guard expert or an expert on anything) but I somehow doubt it's your best position.

Once you had x, you need to shift his weight around in the four directions. He'll start to totter, and once he falls over you get the sweep. Or if he puts his hands on the mat, you can technical stand up to a single leg.

Why did you go to X-guard in the first place? It looked like you just kind of forced it instead of reacting to an opening.

I try to get a hook sweep, then if they stand I'll go for the X-guard and stand for the sweep.

Also, maybe you just do it a bit differently then I, your right leg is hooking in his crotch/upper thigh. I don't see you being able to rock his base much from way up there, try setting both hooks at the knee and kicking out enough to stand, keeping the other leg hugged tight on your shoulder/against your face.
