When grapplers fight it's usually decided by striking. But these two ALWAYS work for the ground fight. I favor Palhares if his cardio is good, because Shields has to be on top and his takedowns haven't aged very well. Palhares is way more explosive so if he doesn't gas then his chances are certainly better.
I think shields will work some sort of takedown. Staying on the feet will pretty much mean that 1) he has to compete against a striker with vastly more power in his hands and feet 2) That Palhares can pull guard in ways that might entangle legs.
Shields odds of not losing a leg are vastly greater smothering from the top of guard or side control.
I am taking Shields, Cesar's guys have had sick leg locks since the 90's, I think Shields can find a way to stay out of leglocks and attack with gnp to a decision.
