So long story short, I've recently decided to join the school wrestling team. I've basically never done sports prior to this (except a few months of infrequent kickboxing) and I want to know if I should be exercising outside of wrestling to help me get into shape enough so that I could last during practice. My school is d1 and I usually gas out halfway through practice, which is three hours long. Would doing extra work be helpful or detrimental to me at this point?

Keep going to the practices and be completely gluttonous otherwise. You're JV I'm assuming so don't worry about your weight, just recover and get into excellent shape. Come end season lift weights and go to the post season, summer and preseason practices and you'll be set.

Wrestling practice is ENOUGH and your body will adjust. I remember telling kids on my football team that practice was a joke compared to wrestling season back when I was in high school. Although a lot of people don't want to believe it, the fact is football play only last 4 seconds and, obviously, wrestling matches are a lot longer

You decided to start wrestling in college?
at a D1 school?
with no previous sports experience?

I'm kind of a highschool kid :P I've taken up wrestling b/c I wanted to pursue fighting as a career in the future so wrestling season seemed like a great opportunity to get in shape and learn how to wrestle/grapple

Must be H.S. Division. If he's saying that he walked on at a D1 College Program, he's the worst troll in the history of SD.

I do that...I lose about 7-8 pounds of water weight per practice but I go home, recover, and eat it back (and then some). I'm gaining weight for some strange reason although I've been eating the same amount as I have prior to the season :P Maybe I should just eat a bit less? Or more quality foods I suppose

Congrats on joining the wrestling team! It's always going to be tough as fuck, but your endurance will improve and it won't always suck. So just hang in there. As far as outside training, read the FAQ to learn up on the strength training.

I agree with the general sentiment, don't do extra conditioning now. Eat well, drink lost of fluids, go to bed early, get lots of sleep, don't drink or smoke.

When the season ends, then you can start working on an out-of-season strength and conditioning plan. However, as a young guy if possible you should be spending most of your time/energy working on your wrestling skills.

Last year my worst practice was when I came in at about 162 and had to lose the full 10 pounds for 152. About 3 guys gave me a sweater, so I wore all 3 and stood after practice for "sprints" an hour afterwards. Made the weight. I'm 205 less than a year later though.

yeah that's what I've been planning on for the most part...I've been doing stronglifts 5x5 before the wrestling season started but I held that off because of obvious reasons (it works well though, got my deadlift to 300 from basically nothing) but my coaches advised me to do light, explosive reps, but I'm still debating whether I even should, at least until I'm deeper into the season and more well conditioned

Stick with it man! It's tough at first but you will get in great shape just from the practices alone. And make sure you're eating clean, don't fill up on crap after practice and eat well on days of practice as my ole coach used to say "You need more fuel in the tank"

If you get serious with it, try doing a sport in the off season to keep in shape year round. I did lacrosse and track to stay in shape for wrestling season.

Just don't quit!!

If your just starting out, I wouldn't do anything outside of wrestling. Read up on the FAQ now, and next off-season lift heavy, eat a lot, and do a bunch of conditioning. You'll come out a little heavier, but in great condition for wrestling. Then next in-season, just find yourself a in-season routine, or research up over the summer, and make one yourself.

Good luck.

Uhh, cutting weight.

We really had now idea what we were doing in HS, and neither did the coach.

Season started like right about now. I was like 122-123 in 9th grade, but I was still growing. By the time for the counties the coach decided I was going 119. I had about zero fat, and was fighting to stay inside 125 at that point.

I just barely ate from Wednesday to Saturday and I came in 119.1 and then had to get naked in front of 3 teams to hit 118.9.

Matches started 3 hours after weigh ins. I chugged a thing of gatorade, still felt like shit. Made myself a sandwich and it made me sick just to look at it. God I felt awful.

Next day I was 131, which is only 12 pounds, but % wise was a lot. Fuck that whole thing sucked.

I did wrestling in high school....my first training session was one of the most difficult of my life

Aww the difference between wrestling strength and lifting strength :)

This. What in the fuck are you on about ATL?

Ts wrestling is tough as hell but stick with it, it's a great sport and will definitely help with your plan of going into mma. That being said if that is your end goal I would start training in mma now rather than waiting til you get good at wrestling first, but that's imo. Good luck either way.

Trust me your body will get use the long wrestling practices, just make sure you eat right and get enough water at the end of practice. You're young, your body will keep up with the high demand that comes with wrestling practice.
