Hi I'm from the UK, I'm planning a holiday to california next year. I thought seeing as I'm going to the USA I would like to train some wrestling whilst I'm there. I know there's a lot of bjj schools out there but have struggled to find much info regarding wrestling.
So if anyone could point offer me some help it would be much appreciated

That's the funny thing about US. Wrestling is HUGE, but only as High School/College/Olympic sport. It is REALLY hard to find a school that offers standalone wrestling (there are some MMA gyms that have wrestling coaches), although you can find individuals that used to be coaches or excellent wrestlers themselves. I live in AZ, one of the best states for Wrestling, and i cant figure out how to get good wrestling instruction here (my BJJ school is excellent, but only offers judo). Good luck duder =/

Planning to start at san Diego, but going for a couple of months so looking to move around whilst I'm there.
My Mrs wants to see the sights (and so do i to be fair) but I also wud like to get some training in whilst I'm there. We have a lot of bjj and mma here in my part of the UK, but lacking in wrestling department, and seeing as America is the home of wrestling I thought it wud be a great place to try and pick up some skills.

Arizona?? one of the best states for wrestling?? I am not trying to be a jerk. I just literally have never seen that statement before

In my (limited) experience it is VERY VERY rare to find wrestling classes for adults who have a beginner's skillset and simply want to develop skill (modest or otherwise) in the Martial Art of Wrestling.

Your best bet is probably Edge Wrestling School, which is in New Jersey, not California. It's the only explicit wrestling school that I can name which does not discriminate against beginners who happen to be adults. Other than that, go to wrestling classes at MMA gyms and hope the coach actually has a background in coaching competitive wrestling. You may be able to find high quality instruction there, but it really varies by gym. I know that Atos have a wrestling class as well, but I also am in contact with a fellow white belt who trains at that gym and he says that it is the most physically exhausting class they offer.

Other than that... I recently attempted to sign up for a wrestling summer camp at Penn State that sounded EXACTLY like what I'm looking for... only to email the program director and have him inform me that my inclusion would violate NCAA compliance guidelines.

BECAUSE APPARENTLY MY DATE OF BIRTH MAKES ME A CHILD MOLESTER.

LIKE, BRO, THERE ARE 13 YEAR OLD KIDS THAT COULD WIPE THE MATS WITH MY ASS.

-_-

There just isn't a lot of leeway for a guy like me who has an elementary schooler's skillset at age 20 yet still WANTS TO LEARN WRESTLING.

Private lessons may be beneficial as well, but you lose out on the sparring aspect with that...

Oh well, don't mean to sound like a downer but yeah, it's really hard to find good places to train wrestling if you are not an actively competing scholastic wrestler OR an alumni who was a former member of the team.

As an addendum, I completely understand why parents would not want their child to wrestle with someone my age... but I literally suck ass and couldn't score on anyone who wasn't in middle school.

You'll have to forgive me, i was basing this response from the good wrestlers in MMA that wrestled in ASU. Ill admit being wrong, i did a quick search online, and we're somewhere in the middle.

Thanks for calling me out, i hate being wrong, lol.

You know the state of California is fucking huge right?

It'd be better if you narrow down the city you'll be at.

OK thanks for the help guys. So by the looks of it I'll just have to go to an mma gym and do.some wrestling there. I suppose it still will be a good experience because I'm sure the wrestling coaches they have there are a lot more experienced than the ones we have in the uk

More likely than not, yeah. It really depends on the coach though. You might encounter some guy who just "teaches" you "moves" i.e. double leg or single leg, without teaching you to apply things like hand fighting, level changing, shooting etc. that will allow you reliably hit those "moves". Those guys are essentially the perpetrators of fraud. But, you might also encounter someone who actually knows their shit and will teach you how to do those things. It varies.

My gym koa use to be fairtex in the Bay Area offers wrestling on the weekends. But finding a gym teaching wrestling everyday is rare.

I live in San Diego. I was a fairly competent wrestler when I was training full time. I also run a team here and train BJJ a few times a day as well. PM me, I can either just train with you outright with my team or you can just come to where I train BJJ; we wrestle there all the time.

Guessing by your current location, I most likely at least know a few people who are technically better and can show you a few things.
