How good is wrestling in terms of a personal defense method? I mean, how good would be a wrestler, with no BJJ or MT training, facing average guys (non competitive fighters) on the streets or a club?

Plus, on americano high schools and/or colleges, wrestlers are seen as the toughest guys, the ones you won't mess around? Tougher than other jocks?

Better than nothing obviously. In a hypothetical empty hand one on one fight, a wrestler would have a big advantage over an average untrained guy. But if your focus was self defence you would want to learn how to move and strike and defend strikes. Movement is key. Real self defence situations are not fair fights, you don't want to be taking someone down and grappling.

If you got in a one on one fight with someone then wrestling could be effective but it's useless against multiple opponents

They had to redesign the arena so that wrestlers don't kill guys every other fight. That should tell you something.

When you slam a guy in the octagon, it looks cool and they get back up. When you slam someone in the street, they don't get back up.

Also guys in the streets don't have takedown defense so this is easy to do
