Guida's performance against Hioki left a bad taste in everyone's mouth it seems so why not look on the bright side and celebrate the wrestlers who finish, past or present?

Urijah Faber is the first to comes to my mind, he's really worked on his striking and BJJ so that it compliments his wrestling very well.

Hughes is another one who had a good record of finishes against his higher level opposition. Johnny Hendricks has been KOing some durable guys like Fitch and Kampmann and was looking for it against Kos as well.

EDIT: This isn't a thread to bash or praise it as the best style. Its a thread to discuss the fighters who come from a wrestling background and have developed into consistent finishers, whether or not they use their wrestling to finish.

In order for a wrestler to finish he's got to learn other stuff.

That's why guys with collegiate rassling creds shouldn't be allowed to do MMA.

Some MMA fighters wrestle... some don't.

Some MMA fighters finish... some don't.

One has nothing to do with the other.

So that's why some of them do learn other stuff, Like Faber and Hendricks have. I think Faber in particular is the model most wrestlers who enter MMA should follow, he's developed into a very well rounded fighter.

Wrestlers use other disciplines to finish fights.

If you want to get technical about it, I guess Rampage with his slams is one of the only mainstream people to actually finish someone with wrestling on a semi-frequent basis (back in the day).

The art itself is an intermediary skill in MMA, totally valuable and needed, but opens doors to all of the other avenues of MMA to actually finish a fight.

Wrestlers who finish fights, are wrestlers who train other things than just wrestling.

Yeah... how is what I wrote wrong?

Because you weren't responding to it in any way. I didn't make any comment either way concerning any correlation between a wrestling background and finishing rates, I just asked for examples of wrestlers who happen to be finishers in light of the recent negativity concerning the Guida decision and the weight of wrestling in the eyes of the judges.

I never remember Faber being a good wrestler. he could scramble, but I dont remember him being a top flight wrestler ever.

Interesting that you post these two. One was a pioneer from the early days and the other a modern super star yet both relied heavily on their wrestling without making too many major strides in striking and BJJ.

I don't know too much about his wrestling days but I do know that is his base. If anything, that just strengthens my case for him as the model MMA wrestler as he has cemented himself as one of the greats in the lower weight classes.

I don't think we should put too much of an emphasis on finishing. There are plenty of fighters who do not finish on a regular basis that I like very much. Faber doesn't finish all that often, neither does Edgar, even Diaz has his fair share of decisions.
It isn't necessarily about finishing, it's about trying to inflict damage and move towards a finish. If you don't get there I won't hold it against a fighter.
It's just the fighters who's goal is to maintain a safe top control for the majority of the fight, and won't attempt to inflict damage or advance position or attempt submissions because it might jeopardize them maintain top control that piss me off.

Jon Jones, Cain Velasquez, Jake Ellenberger, Johny Hendricks, Chris Weidman

I felt like you did correlate the two by making this thread.

Sorry for busting up your thread then.
