Wow Submissions 101...

he does look kinda stiff and awkward...whitebeltish

it's about position over submission. you can know ever submission in the world and suck at BJJ or grappling.

Since this one sounds like it sucks what would be a good brazilian jiu jitsu dvd to buy? Especially for someone just starting out. Has anyone heard of the Craig Kukuk dvd collection? is it any good?

I have learned and tapped people from watching there videos. It has made me a better grappler.

Some interesting issues arose on the UG. There are a few hundred posts, with none coming from the instructor in question, and only one terse reply coming from Bravo. Aside from that post, the last five pages or so feature the majority of the "new" questions.

Wow. They're pretty good. (UG I mean, not sub101) Someone needs to do a reader's digest version of these long threads though....

The detail in their vids is horrible. I don't know if more time is spent on the production of video graphics and design rather than learning the technique properly.

I also saw of one of their videos of their team in a tournament. Most were wearing 10th planet white shirts and gi pants....but the video footage showed their people being out positioned and it look liked they were loosing their matches.

I didn't know if it was a highlight vid for their opponents dominating them or what....?

He should wear a whitebelt if he is teaching in a gi.

Okay, I just had to add this.

Who are you hurting today?
Video originally from Ari B. that he has since taken down. You can still see it here:
Who are you hurting today? - Fight Videos - GorillaFights.com [sorry for the lack of embed]

It's a video of him putting a clinic on... some little kid...:icon_sad::icon_neut
It was just so similar to the Seinfeld clip below (Kramer, kid's class Karate champion), that I thought I'd share.

Can you guys give some examples of bad videos?

Or can you post a video and say where they are missing things and what they are missing?

Well, you could look at that 30 page thread AV just linked to, or you could look up one of the past threads on this. The short answer is yes and there are plenty of examples.

The questions and issues raised in that thread include:

-that he has embellished his credentials in TMA, and completely fabricated his BJJ training
-unsubstantiated criticism by people who claim to know him, which makes him look like a lifelong phony
-archived website claims that are both mocked and questioned
-that he is better suited to create videos for PublishinganE-book101.com, Ninjabouncer101.com, collegeradio101.com, or Dicktracyinakoralgi101.com.
-why the man who granted him affiliation isn't defending him after a 30-page mauling of his character?

A few examples...

Sprinter Escape: How to Escape the Lock Down (half guard)
- it showed just a standard half guard pass used for ages in bjj, but it has been removed.

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Victoria: The Whip Up
- YouTube - 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Victoria: The Whip Up
- the top partner's arms are positioned the wrong way! The bottom guy could just take the back.

Clock Choke from the guard
- YouTube - Clock Choke from Guard
- the hands are positioned the wrong way, this choke doesn't work against a resisting opponent. The choke later talked in comments is the "baseball bat choke", which is a very different animal.

Man if you can't see what's wrong in these vids you might be able to see these moves executed in some great back yard brawls on you tube....

It's cleary evident the lack of training in even the most fundamental moves in bjj...see the arm bar from mount:

That's just sad....

That's just sad....

I've been critical of some of their clips, but it doesn't mean everything is bad. I enjoyed some of the vids and I'm a purple belt training bjj for years. So I'm curious what's so wrong with the two above vids?

Is it just the lack of details?

I've found even BJ Penn vids lack a lot of details, but they are both free.

The important things are other, IMO.

what exactly is so bad about these 2 vids?

I don't think he needs to put a disclaimer in his videos. That's unnecessary. A disclaimer is needed on his web site; because, (1) BJJ Gear sponsors him (2) He lists GJJ and BJJ as his first primary styles (3) He wasn't ranked in BJJ until recently. It really shouldn't an issue now that he is a purple under Eddie Bravo. Clarification is still nice for their gi videos whenever they wear their black belts, though. Some of the videos are ok, some are not. Just like anything else, really.

I think if anything a disclaimer in the videos is necessary for the videos more than the website because the videos travel alot more. I have seen dozens of their videos yet have only been to their site 1 or 2 times. Some of the videos are ok and some are not very impressive at all but the majority of them have a nice big shiny BJG logo on them. When you are wearing a BB and have a sponsor logo like that it can be a little mis-representing to new practitioners. Especially when some of the techniques you are showing are in sub par form or as eddie bravo would say, low percentage.

4 strip blue here since 04'....should be purple this year....been blue for life...

Yes I guess your right I'm being a little critical. I come from a school of thought in which it takes more than just doing technique and really understanding how it works.

I was the kind of guy who trained, drilled forever and yah pulled stuff off all the time...but you know now you are at purple you pay attention to details and start tweaking and optimizing your technique even at the fundamental level reworking and making your technique tighter...

I'm saying it's never that early to gain that train of thought and start thinking that way at the beginner level.

For the armbar...his hip movement in to transitioning to sitting on the shoulder is bad. He looks like he could fall over in all directions. His posture as he pulls the arm across is bad. When he transitions there is too much space between his left leg and his back and the person can just turn his back back to the mat.

Guillotine...forearm closer to the wrist is better on throat when elbows in chest pressure down on top his head...see ribiero no arm guillotine...he sits up with arm around head breaks his fall with the other arm then guillotines? Why is it important to gently break your fall with an oppisite arm rather than using that arm to secure head as you sit back? The other guy can escape the head while he does all that....

Submissions 101 : The S Mount

Submissions 101 : Complicated vs Simple Moves in Jiu Jitsu

I posted these earlier.

Most of their stuff isn't terrible, but when it is bad, it is really bad. I used to feel bad for them because they seemed like they were just trying to spread the BJJ word.

I changed my mind. Sub 101 is run by an arrogant con artist who is tries to deflect all criticisms through censorship (youtube comments), cover ups (notice that the terrible osoto gari throw has been rightly removed), scape goating (blaming his shitty technique on the camera. LOL), and lying (I read the UG thread. COMEDY)

The worst part is that, because of Eddie's sponsorship (or lack there of) I have actually lost A LOT of respect for Bravo in terms of principles.

As long as Ari keeps on dodging critics because he can't accept the fact that he isn't a good grappler yet, I will look at his entire organization as dodgy, and help spread the word.

I know he is reading this.
