Wow, Lloyd Irvin students accused of brutal rape

That's a legal presumption that affects the burden of proof the government must satisfy before punishing someone. It has nothing to do with public opinion.

We should always be ready to revise any belief based on new information... but after reading that news article, we can tentatively conclude that those two male Lloyd Irvin students are evil, disgusting human beings who deserve nothing but our scorn and contempt.

I can only hope terrible things befall them.

It's annoying that I just found out about this because Maldonado has been on facebook all this last week and I would have deleted him had I known of this at all...

As a female who probably first started learning jiu jitsu to avoid a vicious attack like this, I hope a special circle of hell is reserved for male bjj practitioners who would attack women.

I can't understand rapists. A dry vagina is something horrible to penetrate, it fucks up the skin of the dick easily.

This is pretty spot on.

And, as a woman who trains regularly the thing that I find most distressing is that they all knew each other from training. That these two men abused the trust of someone that they trained with is just so incredibly disturbing.

Furthermore, while I trust my coach and (most of) the people that I train with, it's sh!t like this that that keeps me wary. As a woman it's frustrating to walk around with so little trust in the people that I meet and interact with on a day to day basis because most people aren't like this and most men aren't rapists.

But it never fails that when someone is accused or convicted of rape that their friends and acquaintances come to the forefront "He's such a nice guy/quiet guy/friendly guy/normal guy." So how do I tell who actually is a nice/normal/friendly guy and who is a potential rapist masquerading as a nice/normal/friendly guy?

Short answer to your question is that you don't. The best answer I have for you is to always be on guard and be around multiple people that you trust. In this sad case the girl appears to have been "black-out" drunk and remembers bits and piece and was clearly taken advantage of and clearly not in the right frame of mind to make any kind of decision. It's sad but always go with the trust but verify and be on guard.

And, another point about how disturbing this is is that I probably wouldn't feel safe/comfortable being escorted/dropped off somewhere by a single man. "Is he secretly a weirdo? Is he going to try something?" but disturbingly, I'd feel safer with a couple of guys as I don't think they'd try anything with someone else around.

Ugh, god. I need to go look at pictures of puppies now.

Scenarios in which these guys are innocent, and why we can rule those scenarios out:

Scenario 1: The media could be making all of this information up.

Response: If you categorically refuse to believe information without access to first-hand sources, you will not be able to function in society. The media make lots of mistakes, but the chances of them fabricating this are essentially zero.

Scenario 2: The victim made up the entire incident and nothing happened between her and anyone in the parking garage.

Response: The incident is documented on video and she was found there the night of the incident, with police responding and locking down the area.

Scenario 3: The victim was raped by two men, but they weren't the two TLI students.

Response: She knew the two men, so there isn't the same risk of mistaken identity that exists when someone is attacked by a stranger. Her belief about their identity is also confirmed by video.

Scenario 4: The victim was taken into the parking garage by the two TLI students, and then they took turns having consensual sex with her.

Response: In addition to being contradicted by the victim's statement, this theory is incompatible with the fact that the video shows them leaving her on the ground, where she was found that night when the police responded.

So... Anyone want to toss out another theory for why these guys deserve our prayers?

^Seriously, it's atleast mostly true and that's enough on it's own.
I'm praying only for the girl and the judge who will sentence those assholes.

I know both of these guys and have trained with one of them for a long time and considered him a good friend. It is really sad to know that their are people who are capable of doing this-let alone people who you would trust. It is scary what monsters secretly lie within people.

Fortunately this was caught on top so we can skip all the normal bullshit that occurs with rapes where we can all find a way to pretend like it didn't happen.

I know Mateo and he isn't a psychopath or anything like that.

Honestly, we are all jumping over what a newsarticle says and claiming it as 100% fact.

Lets just wait to see what happens in court before we give these two the death penalty.

Jesus, how many times do we have to say this?

Sherdog is not a damn court. We can't convict these guys. In essence, nothing we say matters in the grand scheme of things.

What you have here is a group of random people reacting to an article that they've read. It's no different than railing, around the water cooler, about what Leno said last night.

In that case, you should be shot dead where you stand because hey, its an internet forum and whatever I say probably won't happen.

The "innocent until proven guilty" point has already been made and noted. The evidence against these individuals is overwhelming to the extent that it makes the OJ case look like an Agatha Christie whodunit by comparison.

I can respect it if you want to stick up for your friend, but suffice it to say he has much bigger problems right now than what F12 is saying about him.

Don't understand what the argument is here.

"Innocent until proven guilty" SHOULD be a very important part of our judicial system, so by it's literal definition, I agree with those posters. Reminding people to keep a level head shouldn't be taken as a claim of innocence.

That being said... as soon as they ARE proven guilty (which seems pretty cut and dried based on the evidence, if the report is accurate), then fuck 'em. Hope they endure the same thing they put that girl thru.

I know rape is always a touchy subject but I've known Matt since I started bjj and this is really not like him.

How many rapists do you think give off an obvious, "I'm a rapist" vibe? Because I doubt it's a majority, especially when there is a large element of "victim trusted rapist" in many cases.

Yes, this is a compelling response to my point.

Not only are you an idiot, but you're also an asshole.

Wow wow wow at the timing of posting those rape testimonial vids. WTF are they thinking? Might want to table those for a while...?

This is the type of response that people should be making.

Not saying kill them now because one newsarticle (which may or may not have all the information) is reporting.
