Let's say, less surprised than if anyone else in the roster defeats him...

Yes. I think Khabib is going to dominate Gaethje. Think Khabib/Michael Johnson...

So the game is that a fighter wins the title shot after several fights, just to be beaten by Nurmagomedov?

I think Ferguson would have lost via UD if he had fought Nurmagomedov.

Yes. The only way he wins is by KO and Khabib has pretty good boxing defence. Plus Justin’s KO power will probably be gone as soon as Khabib takes him down

    No.
I think Khabib is incredibly good, but very one dimensional. Once an opponent beats him, there will be a clear game plan to follow.
Is Gaethje that fighter? I'm not sure. But if he is, we will know in the first round.

I don't know , he can keep you in the mat and punish with GnP, he can avoid take downs, good gas tank, he can stand and take punches, I don't think he a is very one dimensional fighter, much less than a defeat is going to show a magic game plan to beat him

The Wrestling of Khabib is unfuckwithable imo too technical it's not some fluke, no one can just have an anti wrestle game plan it's not on the cards unless you have some outrageously good olympic level or like Khabib have been throwing hard bastards and bears arounds since childhood.

Hmm I think that Gaethje is not too good. One thing I would recommend is throwing leg kicks right out the bat really hard because even if Khabib checks them, there'll be accumulative damage that'll benefit him in the later rounds if it gets there, instead of going for the head and leaving himself wide open for a shot. He could go for the body but I think Khabib has good enough footwork and range not to get hit by those early on. When Gaethje throws his leg kicks it's very important to be moving forward or standing still and not going backwards so he can generate enough power.

Why leg kicks are crucial in this fight: as someone who's practiced Judo my entire life, one of the reasons Khabib has such deadly top control is because he is a master of posture. If Gaethje can fuck up Khabib's legs even a bit right away he can neutralize Khabib's top game by weakening Khabib's base and making it easier to get up. I think that too many of Khabib's opponents lose the fight beforehand because they go into it thinking it's going to be a Wrestling match instead of treating it like an MMA fight; examples - Conor, Poirer, Raging Al. It's important to use striking and footwork to neutralize wrestling, especially when you're never going to outwrestle Khabib who's been wrestling his entire life.

Only one of Khabib's recent opponents who's treated it like an MMA fight has been Barboza, but he couldn't generate enough power because he was moving back the entire fight.

I'd be surprised if he spent more than 3 out of 25 minutes not wishing he was someone else

The game plan has been clear as day since day 1... don't get taken down.
