I am a Junior in highschool, i have been training in mma for about 3 months, and i'm thinking about joining the wrestling team at my school to improve my takedown offence/ defence and ground movement.

does anyone think this would be a good idea?

This is my first thread on this amazing forum, so id appricate some good responses.
Thanks!

Andrew

Of course. Would have been better had you started as a freshman or earlier, but 2 seasons of varsity/junior varsity wrestling will dramatically improve your takedowns, hips, balance, feel for bodies in motion and overall athleticism. Go for it, and be ready to learn. Make sure you don't treat it too much as a means to your mma ends, because your coaches and teammates might not appreciate it if they think you're only in it for yourself and your development in another sport.

Thanks for the advice, I talked to my schools wrestling coach and he said he would be happy to have me. i don't know alot about highschool wrestling, do i need to wear some kind of special shoes? and if so where can i get them at?

wrestling will help a ton. talk to the coach and he should shoot you in the right direction of what gear you will need, mainly shoes, my school provided the headgear, and there's not much else you need. just be ready to run your ass off once season starts

Not to mention it's probably going to make you a lot physically stronger :)

No, I don't see why training would you make you better.
That doesn't really make sense.

The one thing that has always intimidated me about people with high school/college wrestling experience is the reps they have. Most any grappling position you put them in they're going to have been in a whole bunch of times. Free mat time + conditioning = awesome.

The only thing I don't like what I see of wrestling is all the monkey-business related to cutting weight. There seem to be a lot of unhealthy practices that go on, and unfortunately it seems universal enough that not doing it puts you at competitive disadvantage. Granted, this is from an outsider, so I don't have any real experience in that department. I was asked to join my college's wrestling team, not due to any perceived skill on my part, but because they thought I could make weight for the lightest weight class. The plan was that most other schools didn't field guys in that class so it'd be free points. My concern was that if they did have anybody to field I'd quickly find myself contorted into some pretzel-like shape.

In college they thought they could pick up forfeit points by fielding a person with no wrestling experience at 125?!? How could any school (let alone conference) have a varsity team without recruiting any 125ers? That is very, very, very strange....

Yes, the special shoes for wrestling are called wrestling shoes.

Truman was not known for its wrestling... or its football... etc. Actually, they've got a pretty good women's swimming program, but yeah... no 125 wrestlers when I was there.

I started wrestling my junior year in high school. I regret not starting my freshman year. My brother who started as a freshman eventually got a scholarship to a Division 1 college.

I agree. OP, this is a really silly question with a really obvious answer.

In addition to what others have said I'll also throw in that the wrestlers I know have a tremendous work ethic.

This question is a good intro to the forum for you, though. So, welcome, and good luck.

PLEASE don't go into a wrestling room and think of it just enhancing your BJJ/MMA game. Learn wrestling because you want to learn the art of wrestling. Any other reason you end up with a bastardized version of wrestling. Wrestling improving your ground skills will just happen naturally from that.

In my opinion wrestling helps your game alot. An average highschool wrestler who wrestled 4 years probably has 150 competition matches. This gives the wrestler a huge advantage in bjj competitions especially at the whitebelt and bluebelt levels.

enhancing my mma/bjj was only part of the reason, i do actually want to learn the art of wrestling as well
