Im so fucking over living in a big city, next time I leave Houston I'm not coming back no matter what, for real this time.

I just spent 2 weeks in Singapore. Fuck all that, give me the suburbs any day.

This is something I've been struggling with. I worked my ass off to get up the cash to stay in NYC, but its proven to be even more expensive than I anticipated on an almost unrealistic scale. Most of my family are moving to small towns and I have to drive out to visit them now, but small town living doesn't fit with my lifestyle at all. My wife and I love being near ethnic groceries and 24 hour restaurants/bodegas, nevermind the constantly running data and power grid and god tier medical facilities.

There's a few places around Jersey that are a reasonable distance to NYC that have malls and stuff nearby, those seem somewhat attractive. I've also looked into cities like Jacksonville in Florida, but I don't want to go somewhere like that until my family croaks. For now I'm pushing the boulder that is the NYC cost of living, happy to be here but nervous as fuck.
NYC is really overrated

I'd rather live in Jersey and take a train
or live in CT and take a 5 dollar train to the city

Like others have said, hated country living as a kid, moved to a big city (NYC), now I can't wait to get back to the quiet, rural life.

The "less than an hour outside of a decently sized city" life is ideal.

I live in Colorado Springs now which is just shy of 500k. I think it’s about the perfect size for me. Not really any sky scrapers, but plenty of commerce. Tons of things to do, places to eat, places to drink, etc.

The main problem with Jersey is the taxes and commuting costs are through the damn roof. Like it would be perfect for me cause it would be even closer to my family and it wouldn't interrupt my work situation, but I don't want to get stuck paying 5 figures in property tax just so I can be near a mall. And god forbid you wanna go to a Manhattan hospital to see a specialist or some shit, you've now got double the tolls and pretty soon congestion pricing as well. They might as well just build a wall around the damn city at this point.

I don’t know all this east coast shit. I need numbers, people.

If under a million people within the city limits is considered a small city, I would say I’d prefer to live in a small city. If over 500,000 people is considered a big city, then I’ll take a big city. But I don’t like the mega cities like LA and SF (though SF’s population is maybe just under 1 million).

But cities like San Diego are great.

I do sometimes wish I could just move out to the country and get a job at like a grocery store or something. But I think I would get bored and drink too much.
San Diego has about twice as many people within city limits as San Francisco. SF has a more populous metro area, though.

I voted big city, but I mean more like a small city outside of a big city rather than a small city in the middle of nowhere. This is basically where I've lived my whole life, in various cities.

I live in a city that has about 50,000 and there's a neighboring city across a bridge that also has about 50,000. I can't imagine living out in the sticks and the overcrowdedness of a big city. This is pretty ideal.

I was thinking if there was such a state where absolutely everyone was educated, mature, sufficiently wealthy so there wasn't any crime or vandalism or other bad shit associated with dumbshits, would people want to live there. Would there be a cost premium to live there? Would there be some background check application to apply to live there?

I live in a huge city so obviously all I want is to live in the woods.

College town, which is basically all the SE is minus the 3 big metro areas. Combines all the rural farms, drug-infested ghettos, and some up to date amenities/shit to do without going to one extreme or the other.

I'm in a middle class suburb and happy with it, not enough shit in rural towns to keep me entertained and a big city is too busy.

Rural

I like the lawlessness
That’s why I like it too. Don’t know how anyone can spend everyday being concerned about the right and wrong of things. When no one is around you can do anything.

I come from the second-largest city in New York, Buffalo. The metro area has a population of a bit over 1.1 million people.
Now I live just outside the "city" of Sedona, AZ which has a population of about 10,000. I find it amusing that Sedona is listed as a city because back home it would be a village or a township.

In the sticks on a lake where you have to take your boat over to the town to buy things but still have good Internet and a dope postman with his own boat that phones ahead to see if you want anything picked up from the town so you don't have to go over there every day in your boat.
Need a stoop and some balconys and a weed farm nearby that you can't go into except I can because they like me and sometimes we trade books for weed or just stories. And dogs.

Well I do that now and the train isn’t five bucks :( but I think after a certain age you are right about NY. The thing about ct is our taxes are really high and there isn’t as much to do . Shit u can’t even get plastic bags at the store anymore here ... and u have to pay for paper . We get taxed on everything. They just made it so u have to be 21 to smoke cigs too. It’s a weird place with a lot of stuck up people

Like places around Boston? I lived in Brighton in Boston which was cheap for Boston . Trying to see how many times I can type Boston ... anyways newton and Cambridge seemed just as pricey . The best part about where I lived in Boston is literally the kids across the street lived in Brookline and paid 400 dollars more in rent then I did .. just because they were in “Brookline” . My street was the last street in Brighton before u got out of Boston in that area.. mount hood . I had the green line C, b ( that stopped to much never took it) and D line all within 5 minutes walking . At that time they didn’t charge outbound trains after Fenway now they do

I’d live there .. prolly be like Greenwich or something
