Would Brock or Carwin be champ today?

look at the top 5
guys like volkov who fought longer than stipe became a top 5 in a weak era

the man was like a nobody in stipes era
Volkov should have won his last 5, beat Nelson, Werdum and Overeem in Stipe's time and knocked out the guy who knocked out Stipe himself. Stipe's ancient and has been retired for years, Volkov has just entered his prime. not time-line compatible.

Outside of Tom, they have a pretty good chance. Hell Shane would make it look competitive against Aspinall. Prime JDS couldn't put Carwin away and I think JDS would do great too vs Tom in a striking battle

Prime JDS was a better striker than aspinall and Lesnar and carwin were champs during or around that era. Aspinall is athletic, big, and skilled, so he would be a good opponent, but aspinall lacks quality wins. Blaydes pavlovich and volkov would not be top 5 heavyweights in the jds/carwin/brock/Caine era. Mark Hunt was still cleaning up some of the names in the division when he was almost 40.

Obligatory.

The 'evolution' of MMA has sometimes been overstated (regression has taken place in some areas of the game), particularly in the divisions from 185 pounds upwards. It is especially true at HW.

Lesnar and Carwin would likely be very successful today, including possibly winning the UFC belt. Theirs was the era of some *very* large HWs (Brock cut weight to reach 265 pounds). Lesnar's raw athleticism and physical intensity would be a problem for any human who ever lived. Carwin was a knockout machine.

Carwin has to be one of the most overrated fighters in UFC history. The dude has 2 decent wins in his entire career, Mir and Gonzaga and the then a laundry list of bums. He's literally 2-2 against anybody anyone has ever heard of and then disappeared the instant drug testing became a thing.... because he was obviously on a metric fuck ton of them.

Derrick Lewis has a far more impressive resume than Shane Carwin ever had and he's never been anything but a middling fighter.

That's a good point, 49 year old Kongo dominated Volkov with wrestling yet Sherdog acts like Aspinall is HW Khabib.
So fucking strange for a guy that has only taken down Arlovski, Volkov, and Baudot and defended only 2 takedowns from a 10 day notice Spivac in the first round, his ENTIRE career. Yet constantly hear about his size and speed are enough to defend everything basically. He has no accolades in wrestling and the UK isn't known for wrestlers.

Gane took Volkov down twice while injured in his last fight with him, yet same people will say how Gane is a white belt with no wrestling. The emotions over Jones/Aspinall have got people fucked up. Maybe Aspinall isn't a white belt wrestler, but he's not proven to be anything yet.

Aspinall and Ngannou still wreck them both, the rest of the division they could probably handle though .

He forced the supposed GOAT to submit to him before the fight even began. Definitely not a paper champ
Jones was old, didnt want to risk his legacy to a nobody who will probably get KTFO in his next one or two fights anyway.
Smart move

Exactly. Why would he risk his legacy of being an eye-poking, PED abusing, woman-beating, drunk-driving, down-low duck by actually showing some integrity and bravery and fighting a deserving contender?

Doesn't really hold up when the majority of Jones wins are old guys who were willing to risk their legacy on an up and comer.
It was their era, Jones just captured the title early because he stepped in as an injury replacement. They had to fight Jones to get the belt, they weren't risking anything. They had no choice.

Machida, Rampage, Evans, Shogun were the top guys at the time - they were not "old". They were just displaced by a better fighter. Those guys were all recent champions when Jones fought them.

I am not sure who you're talking about to be honest, Stephan Bonnar? He's the only "old" guy who took a risk fighting "up and comer" Jones.

Maybe. I can see them beating anyone except Tom Aspinall and Tom is untested. I know he has beaten everyone avalaible, but well - Blaydes ain't ATG names
