I’ve done martial arts for 20 years. I’ve had the opportunity to spar/grapple/wrestle practitioners at all levels. As a result, I’ve gotten my ass kicked sooooo many times. And I think after so many ass kickings, I can officially say the worst way and it may surprise some.
In my humble opinion, there is nothing worse than fighting a great wrestler who is smacking you with pitter-patter punches. On TV it looks lame and pointless and you hardly want to credit the guy a winner even though he dominated. But if you’ve never experienced it, let me describe it:
When you have a great wrestler controlling you, one of the first things you will feel is uncomfortable heat. No matter his size, he feels like 500 lbs and unbearably hot. Second, you are short of breath because of his weight on top of you and because every inch you try to move requires your full strength. And you desperately want to move because he has restricted the movement of every limb. That combined with the heat and trouble catching your breath becomes a terrifying sense of claustrophobia. Honestly at those times I just want him to let go of an arm not even so I can defend myself, but just so I can feel myself stretch and move for a second. And all the while this human coffin is punching you lightly in the face like Chinese water torture and you can’t even stop it. It’s the worst. A great wrestler can make you almost want to tap just to get out of the position.
That said, getting your ass kicked by repeated leg kicks is also awful.
Thoughts?
