Wonderboy Thompson : "I know I can knock Robbie Lawler out"

Wonderboys striking is just on another level.
Easy fight for him imo.
 
See lawler getting picked apart then going ape Shit forward either scoring or getting K.o
 
If Stephen can control the distance, then he wins one way or another. If Robbie can turn it into a dogfight, then he probably knocks Stephen out. It's really up to Lawler. He needs to press and keep pressing. I know that leaves him open to one of the best counter punchers in the game, but if Robbie sits back in the pocket Stephen is going to put him to sleep. You just can't believe how fucking hard he kicks.
 
I think WB wins, due to being more accurate, more technical and having an unorthodox TMA style. I will say this--Robbie's style has been very effective, but it has to be wearing on him. He's 34--not that old, but has been competing iin MMA for 15 years. He's been in some wars, especially the last 3 years. You can only come forward, press the action and rely on your chin and power for so long...
 
robbie has to have hands down the most underrating striking in mma people still think he is just some uneducated brawler he is patient,technical,great head movement,slips punches,counters,jabs,body shots,etc.
 
if anyone can beat thompson, its lawler. he has the chin and power to do what shogun did to machida in their rematch. bumrush, eat shots and land your own.
 
I believe it too. But believing it and doing it are two very different things. Lawler is a tough old boy and he doesn't have any quit. Wonderboy has a good chance of stopping Robbie, but he has to fight a perfect fight. Lawler is pretty damned good nowadays about dragging guys into deep water and softening them up along the way. IIRC he's still checking kicks too.

Robbie's age (in fight years) and the wars are (I think) about to show. Which sucks for Robbie and would be very lucky for Wonderboy. But who knows? Robbie has surprised the ever-loving fuck out of us before with one of the best career resurgences in MMA history, pre-USADA. You'd be an asshole and stupid to count him out.

Wonderboy needs to either take Lawler's head off early, or he needs to put Lawler in zombie mode and find a way to put him down without getting drawn into a brawl. Neither of those things is terribly easy to do. Lawler has matured considerably. One bad exchange and Wonderboy could be in for an ugly night.

Also worth noting that Lawler has an underrated possum game. And Wonderboy will be high on his own hype (re: kicks in particular). I expect Lawler to play possum early and often. Will be interesting to see what the odds are by fight night.

Edit: Lawler needs to be worrying about Woodley tho lol.

People always confuse "can he?" with "will he?" If you don't realize a headkick from Wonderboy can knockout anyone in the division you're just not being objective.
 
Yeah. I could see this happening too. Robbie has taken a lot of punishment in his last few fights and Wonderboy is scary accurate with his striking.

if wonderboy chases for a ko, he will fall for that trap and brawl. Then he will have a higher chance of being kod himself. Like you said his best bet is to snipe for a decision.

Will he? Doubtful

He just went 5 rounds with Rory without a finish. Robbie is infinitely tougher then Rory.

Don't expect Stephen to be high on his own hype. He was GSP's striking coach a long time ago and had people like Chuck (while he was champ) show up at his striking seminars. If he loses it won't be because of a swollen ego.

Of course he can. When Robbie goes full beast mode and doesn't defend anything it's fair game and anything can happens.

Agreed, it's a far-fetched theory and I don't see it happening either. Just throwing it out because Wonderboy's hype train is picking up steam and really you never know what that'll do to a guy (or girl).

WW is so fucking awesome right now. Lawler's days with gold are numbered but goddamned if it isn't going to be an amazing ride. And if GSP legit makes a comback... holy shit. I haven't been this stoked about WW in...well, ever. Haha.

Dont get me wrong man, I love Lawler, one of my favourite fighters and the caveman analogy is only in comparison to the sublime slickness of WB. Against anyone else Robbie looks the part of a technically sound powerhouse even in berserker mode. The Manhoef fight was weird and if Melvin wasnt such a pure offense focused glass cannon couldve gone very differently, props to Ruthless for pulling that one off with crippled legs but thats not happening against Thompson. I can only remember one other guy in MMA making top tier opponents
look silly regularly, and that guy was prime Anderson. Lawler has a
punchers chance, ground fighting is against the mans very essence, thats it. I hespect your opinions but that is mine.
