A needless Machida rematch that no one is clamoring for makes no sense. The only reasonable thing in terms of hype, in terms of rankings, and in terms of timing is to schedule Machida/Gus for the #1 contender spot and to schedule it SOON so the winner can fight Jones by November. We just had two BS title shots in a row, nearly a year flushed down the toilet. With only ONE title shot left after this we need to make it count. A Machida rematch just doesn't fit that bill right now.

He also hasn't beaten Hendo from the old guard or Gus, Glover, or Mousasi from the emerging guard or Cormier if he drops. But all that is besides the point.

The point is his last title defense shouldn't be wasted since we just wasted two shots in a row just because TUF had bad ratings.

He was beating Silva before he tried to do a pirouette in the rematch (which happened to take place in 2012)

Gus has a few victories but didn't look all that impressive in the Shogun fight. No other signature victories or fights you can use with Gus to say "that guy deserves a title shot". And giving the title shot to Cormier his first fight in the UFC as a light heavyweight weight would have been even stupider than giving the shot to Sonnen.

It's like the 5 rounds or 10-8 levels of domination and prior to that taking out the #2 and #3 guys in your division means nothing.
