Witcher 3 dev on making a stand against paid dlc

CDPR is a cool dev team, but honestly none of the dlc looks like anything I'd give a crap about. Horse armor and beards? Meh. It doesn't make a difference as to whether Im purchasing the game or not. It pretty much all comes down to whether or not they finally fixed their combat.

It's a con where they can take out stuff that's meant to be in the game and then either charge people for it as DLC or give it to free when it should be in the game to begin with.

To be fair, it's a double edged sword to give free minor DLC so close to release. Especially considering how often gamers criticize DLC as content they should have gotten at launch.

But I honestly can't come up with a reason they aren't able to, within the next 3 months, just add these beard and horse armor options to game.

If we're being completely honest here, this is a rather blatant instance of content being withheld for the sole purpose of being DLC post launch. Since it's trivial, I don't really care. But at the same time I would prefer having all available cosmetic options right away on my first start up.

Like I said, the content is fairly inconsequential so I'm hardly affected by it. But it's a rather clear double standard because CDPR is such a well revered studio.

Meanwhile, other rgame developers are probably laughing their ass off starting with the " How many polish game developers..."

Seriously, kudos to them. I wish some gaming companies would remember that they were gamers once.

Thats a beautiful attitude, never played a witcher game, but I love me an RPG so I'm gonna gamble and grab this game.

^Ain't no gamble getting a Witcher game, if you like story-driven RPGs you will enjoy it.

They did announce this before the latest delay at a time when the studio is done with the assets and crushing bugs and optimization. Some could be done and had not been but into the engine or stuff they were working on but had to drop. The last few months of game development is usually insane.

Also big production houses will give the DLC to a second studio that starts making it during the games development and the main team wont even have anything to do with it. It could all be done I have no idea but hey they could easily be charging 5 bucks a pop but would rather not.

I'm buying this one for sure and I can hardly wait for Cyberpunk 2077!
WAR CDPR!

Let's be real here. Beards and Horse Armor. That shit is done. And if it isn't, it could easily be done in the next 4 months. Yes, the final stages of game development are hectic, but that excuse never holds water for any other developer releasing DLC so close to launch even if the DLC is more complicated, I.E. maps, characters, etc.

It still takes resources to put that into the shipped game, even if another studio developed it. Engineering AND QA. And QA probably doesn't have any bandwidth at this point. Even if it's done, it's likely not worth the risk to the product to try and cram as much in at the last minute.

And since it's free, I can't see any issue with it. Now if they promised free DLC, and then either never released it or charged, then that's grounds for anger. Probably false advertising but I'm not that hip to those laws.

That's because a lot of DLC these days is made by another studio. And games being rushed to release unfinished with the DLC these days is getting pretty old. Its nice to have someone take their time and do it right.

Again, this is the same argument put forth for any other dev releasing DLC so close to the release date. For studios like Bioware, this argument is dismissed and people constantly complain that they are not getting the "full game" they paid for.

To be fair, a lot of that might be be specifically because this Witcher DLC is pretty meh. It is kinda shitty to buy ME 3 and not get the playable protean party member. The problem is, all of the above arguments not only apply to that DLC, but are actually more accurate since it's so much more detailed. I can't understand the logic of defending beards and horse armor because of the strain it puts on developer resources, yet more complicated and game affecting DLC doesn't deserve the same standard.

And a lot of it isn't. Outsourcing is still managing available resources, and the same standard applies. But let's be real, people have gone on google and tried to find out if DLC has been outsourced prior to complaining about it about never times.

Can't we just be honest here? CDPR is a great studio that's sort of in the place bioware was a couple decades ago. The indie start up that pours their heart and soul into the game. Because of that, people are willing let small things go even if they'd criticize it if it were done by a bigger studio.

My point isn't that there's anything wrong with what CDPR is doing, only that gamers often have double standards.

This is fucking awesome.

Only thing that could make it even more awesome is if they made a few DLC's to parody classic paid DLCs of other developers... like horse armor.

Hopefully this release will rocket them into the big leagues.

Breaking news: game developer releases free but minor dlc, gamers complain anyway.

That's fair criticism though, because it costs extra. I agree 100% that day 1, purchasable DLC is bullshit. But if it's free, I understand why the logistical decision was made.

I didn't get that. I suppose I agree.

Looking forward to this game. Can't decide if I'm going PC or PS4. Witcher 2 I played on PC (obviously), but used a PS3 controller for movement/combat, and keyboard and mouse for inventory etc.
