Where does a win in this fight put either guy? In my opinion neither will have done enough to earn a title fight, but a number one contender bout will definitely be in order. It's a fun fight that's being overshadowed by the rest of the UFC 178 which is pretty non debatable card of the year.

I honestly see Romero ending it by TKO midway through, he's looked like a monster in the UFC and I don't think Romero is the one to end his streak. What can Kennedy do that Romero can't do better? Wrestling? Edge goes to Romero. Striking, neither guy is too technical but Romero throws a higher variety of strikes and with a hell of a lot more power.

I'd say the winner gets matched with another rising contender in a bout to determine who gets a title shot. Rockhold fits somewhere in this equation depending on his next fight. Rumor is, he could be fighting Machida. If he beats Machida, he's deserving of a title shot right away, but if he fights someone lower down the totem pole like CB Dolloway or Michael Bisping, he'll likely have to fight one more time. I don't know about you guys, but Rockhold vs. Romero sounds like a damn good #1 contender fight to me.

What do you guys think about this fight, it's implications, and the MW title picture in general? Gotten a lot more exciting since Anderson's defeat. One more possibility for a barn burner is Rockhold vs. Mousasi. If Jacare wins, I think he gets the title fight. But if Mousasi wins, he'll likely need one more fight, and Rockhold would definitely fit the bill.

If Jacare wins over Mousasi in an impressive fashion, I think he'll recieve the next title shot. If it'll be unimpressive, he'll probably rematch Rockhold for a title shot, assuming Rockhold gets a win in his next fight.

If Mousasi takes the W over Jacare, then I say match Mousasi up with Kennedy/Romero winner and give the winner of that fight a title shot.

Rockhold will probably be matched up with Machida next, and could very well get a title shot straight afterwards if he wins in an impressive fashion. If Machida wins, he'll probably fight the loser of Weidman/Vitor.

Rockhold holds a W over Kennedy during their SF days though. Can you imagine how much more whining we'd have to hear from Rockhold if Kennedy was give a shot!?

I think the winner definitely needs another win or two before getting a crack at the shot. With Vitor, Jacare, Moose and even Machida all still in the mix, there's a bit of a line. If Anderson puts Diaz away in insanely explosive fashion, people will have him back in the discussion, as will - most likely - Dana. I see no less than 2 additional fights needed for these guys to step away from the pack. And by then, who knows what the other contenders have done.

Imo Mousasi/Souza should get next title shot and Kennedy/Romero should fight Rockhold for the next shot after that.

Mousasi is only 1-1 at MW. He'll most likely need a third consecutive win even if he ends up completely dismantling Jacare.

It would put the winner in position to face a top 5 fighter. Likely the loser of Weidman v Belfort or Jacare v Moose. Something of the sort.

I feel like Kennedy vs Romero and Jacare vs Mousasi are fights to determine the next number 1 contender fight.

nope, he will need nothing if he dismantles Jacare.

Kennedy by sub

Hope so. Pulling off such a feat would be incredible for sure, but knowing the UFC, they're not looking at the next contenders based on how legitimate of a threat they pose to the champion, but based on how many PPV's they'll sell.

Sadly, Mousasi is relatively unknown and hasn't had a chance to prove himself to the UFC's casual fanbase as someone who they'd absolutely want to see challenge for the title next. Jacare is in a similar spot himself, I feel.

Of course, I realize both Mousasi and Jacare are legitimate challengers and pose a real threat to anyone who happens to be the champion.

could not agree more with that statement.
making either of them face someone like Romero or Kennedy to "earn" a shot is ludicrous.
there is a definitive upper echelon at 185 and both these guys belong there.
the 2nd tier would include Tim, Yoel, Luke & CB(maybe Bispy too).

i think that the winners of each match up: jacre vs. mousasi and kennedy vs. romero could face each other and how that fight goes could determine the next #1 contender.

right now, unless vitor fails a test, weidman is tied up for a while. plus, depending on how rockhold's injury is rehabbing, he could fight and put himself in a #1 contender fight now matter how the other fights go.

i could see the UFC keeping rockhold as an alternate if vitor doesn't it make to the cage in December to face Weidman.

The winner of this fight is most definitely deserving of a title shot! Unfortunately, MW is stacked right now and it's likely the winner will need another win against a top MW before receiving a shot.

It's all about timing, injury, who's popular, etc. when you have a deep and deserving group of talent like the MW division.

Probably a #1 contender bout, although if things pan out a certain way they could probably have a chance of sneaking into a title shot.

Yep. Exactly this. With CB beating up on the Cung/Bisping winner, and someone from the above fracas to make one of the next contenders, while we wait for Anderson to crush nick and take over the headlining duties.

Contender bout. Just not too sure who it should be against. Rockhold if he doesn't get Machida next. Dollaway would be alright with me but it'd be a reach

Like DC, Romero is a beast who got into the sport super late. Hopefully, he gets a TS sooner than later. He's one of the scariest MW and I'd hate to see father time crush him before he gets his shot.

If Jacare wins then Jacare gets the next title shot. Rockhold vs Romero/Kennedy winner for next title shot after Jacare.

If Mousasi wins, then Mousasi vs Rockhold for next title shot, and Romero/Kennedy winner becomes a top contender, who will fight CB or something, unless this fight ends in a real finish.
