Hello all. I will be moving to Windsor, Ontario for University for the upcoming year and was hoping somebody from that area can give me an overview of the grappling schools there. I've been training for 3 years (blue belt) and will be attending school in Windsor for the next 3-4 years.

From what I've looked up there are 4-5 schools in the area:
Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu- Jean Jacques Machado
Caique Jiu Jitsu Academy of Windsor- Caique
Maximum Training Center- Jorge Britto
Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu Tecumseh- Xande/Saulo Ribeiro
Central Combat Sports- Daniel Valverde

I once visited an MMA school over a year ago while on vacation(not in Windsor) and I had a target on my back from the moment I walked in and left beat up and very sore for the week. I would like not to have a repeat of this. I don't want to be the world champion. I just want to train to have fun, stay in shape and maybe make some friends as I'll be new to the area. Anybody train or used to train at any of these locations that can give some feedback?

I grew up in Windsor and even did my undergraduate degree at the University of Windsor before moving for work. I trained at Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: http://www.windsorbrazilianjiujitsu.com/ for over six years. I cannot recommend it enough. The instructor is really technical and the training partners there are really friendly and treat each other with respect. For your specific goals I think Windsor BJJ is the best choice. Your attitude towards training would fit right in there. Safety of training partners is top priority, they aren't looking to kill each other, and leaving ego at the door is strongly emphasized. If you have any specific questions let me know or feel free to message the group on facebook and the instructor or one of the assistant instructors should get back to you quickly.

Firstly, congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Windsor! It is a world class university and I hope you take advantage of all the great things going on there.

What undergraduate program are you going into?

What school do you currently train at?

Secondly, your list of schools pretty much encompass everything going on in the area, minus the two Judo Clubs, but it looks like you are more interested in the ground game.

I have trained at Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu of Tecumseh for over eight years and I can tell you from first hand personal experience that there is no better Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the area than here.

Eric Marentette is our head instructor and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt. Eric is a great teacher and competitor (having medalled at the Pan Ams & Masters Worlds). We have at the same time a super relaxed and fun atmosphere, as well as, the most successful competition team in the area. Here are links to our official website and facebook page:

Let me know if you need any more specific information about my school (or about the University of Windsor for that matter).

Lastly, my suggestion to you is to check out all of the schools that interest you. I would take all of the free trial classes to get a first-hand real feel for the instructors and the vibe of the schools. Doing so will allow you to make an informed choice when deciding where you want to invest your time and money.

Best of luck!

you want to go to one of these 2, keep in mind jorge britto is in toronto, and saulo and xande obv in cali. central i think is just no gi for the most part and not near uni unless u have car. if u have a car id check out detroit bjj too

Thanks for the replies. I figure that all of the heads of the affiliations would very rarely be able to visit or teach. I would think that Jorge Britto would be around most often since he's in Toronto. I will take your advice and take the trial class before signing up.

Jorge comes down for seminars twice a year. He was just down this month. He is a really good dude and an amazing instructor at Toronto BJJ (Ribeiro).

Good luck with your studies and your search!
