Windows users, hope you don't install patches religously!

I guess it was a bonus that my machine's liquid cooling set up died recently.
"The problems are so bad that you'd be well-advised to uninstall the offending Automatic Update patches, even if your machine is working fine at the moment. It's possible, but by no means certain, that as long as the bad patches are at work, installing certain applications or modifying your fonts in specific odd (but entirely legitimate) ways may brick your machine."

My shit has like 400 updates that need to be installed. I never do them, lol

i have windows 8.1

is this going to effect my PC?

"The saga that started last Tuesday continues, with Microsoft finally acknowledging that some Windows 7 machines have Blue Screen problems caused by several Black Tuesday patches, and Windows RT, 8, and 8.1 machines may have Black Screen problems with some patches."

So yea it could.

i update accordingly and didn't get any of them. good look, though, ts.

well this pisses me off, I have my pc to auto update. what is going with microsoft lately?? it seems like all they do is fuck up

I never have my comp set to auto-install updates, as I don't trust any tech. companies anymore, what with planned obsolescence and all.

Checked my update history, and don't see any of the patches in the list, nor are they in queue to be installed...so I appear to be in the clear.

Thanks for the heads up though, I'd have been pissed if my rig got bricked over an update, after all the comp trouble I've been having lately.

So M$ recently released a bunch of bad patches that can potentially brick your computer. If you've got Auto-Update installed you need to act quickly. MS recommends removing the patches even if your machine is working fine.

What the article doesn't say is if MS has any plan to reimburse consumers due to this mistake.

From the article (which is what uses the term "brick" erroneously):

At 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Xformer posted a detailed, accurate description of the Blue Screen on a Windows 7 system, identifying KB 2982791 as the culprit. He noted that the problem disappears when reverting to an earlier restore point.

Here's the temporary mitigation:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2982791

If you can recover the system ON THE SYSTEM that's been corrupted, you have not bricked anything.

Anybody wanna include idiot proof instructions on how to remove these updates from Windows 7?
I have no freakin idea how to do that shit
