With all the talk about self driving cars and the supposed benefits like reducing crashes due to human error, can we do the same for lethal home defense?

Self driving cars are depriving us of the experience of freedom that comes from driving a car and maybe pushing the passengers head down. They also put human lives at stake due to computer error.

So, can we do facial recognition and etc so the guns will know the face of residents of the house, then have security settings.
Perhaps even making words or facial gestures that would tip off things like you were being held hostage.

If we can automate driving why not self defense? Also, it absolves the defender from the blood of the dead criminal splayed about?

Are we ready for progress? What is the worse that could happen?

Came in here to post Robocop vid....damn. I bet if and when it does become a thing a lot more homeowners will be killed by it than home intruders. I forget to turn my alarm off all the time imagine if I had some turret that emerged from my bushes or some shit

Sounds similar to the fear people felt when automobiles first hit the streets. They were unknown and unregulated, and ended up being the cause of many unnecessary deaths.

Of course now we don't even question their usefulness in society, and despite still being dangerous we accept the risks because the rewards are too great.

edit: I am assuming this is more of an anti-automation thread than necessarily a thread about gun automation in particular. Apologies if you aren't actually anti-automation.

A lot of people set off their home alarm system accidentally. It's a common mistake. Set this off by mistake and the last thing you'll see is your wife and kids' lifeless bodies flinch as they get pumped full of bullets. Sounds like a great idea.

Probably....

Although there's certainly opposition to the idea.
After all, they already have them in space...

*Drunkenly forgets alarm code*

In certain countries in Africa it might be worth the risk though

You'll be Parent of the Year when somebody hacks your turret.

That's crazy. At least it doesn't disciminate based on facial recognition. I don't really mind this as long as it's indisciminate. The second it starts making it's own decisions about who's good or bad is where I draw the ethical line.

Just saw some other posts and think I need to clarify: not for home defense. But for the defense of secure military compounds (or in the case of what @Ruprecht posted, the Korean DMZ)? Absolutely. Would suck if you're the type of hiker who goes to Korea and gets "lost", though.

Idk, but the ones in the movie Congo were fucking sweet....

Acme is working on it with the DIY A-bomb upgrade. Wile E. Coyote is testing it right now.

But the thing is, it has facial recognition. We are in the 21st century here now.

Lol, this could be good for having the in-laws over for holiday dinner.
"Babe, someone hacked our auto-gun. I didn't mean for it to kill your whole family. Damn you Russian hackers! You really exist!"

What could possibly go wrong?

Ask the guy in the Tesla.....:eek::eek::eek:

Umm, no, because that has been illegal (using deadly force in defense of property without human endangerment) dating back to English common law, most recently outlined in Katko v. Briney, in which a homeowner who set up a spring gun to shoot trespassers was found liable for subsequent injuries to trespassers.

They might become a thing, but consider this:

Would a decent parent ever booby trap their home? Why not?

But the thing is, it has facial recognition. We are in the 21st century here now.

We have some skilled, devious 21st century criminals who could easily use one of these to their advantage.

Neighbour trying to deter the intruders, cats, kid fetching his ball/frisby from your lawn.... No way it could determine the difference. It's overkill and totally stupid.
