So... the adventure continues...

I've been home from school (graduated college) for about 3 months now. I'm in the best shape that I have ever been in in my entire life. I finally have the muscle strength, and muscle / cardiovascular stamina that I've wanted for a long time. These things would be enough to make a normal person happy.. but apparently not me.

Before tonight, I'd rolled once since being home and although I couldn't really do anything to anybody, I was able to not get submitted and even get some reversals. The problem is that tonight I trained with an old buddy of mine and some of his guys and I got hosed by everybody. For some reason I forgot every single guard pass that I knew and every single submission escape that I knew. I'm still cringing at the poor technique that was used to submit me and, in retrospect, I did nothing to avoid it. I was getting subbed by stuff that I would've laughed at in the past.

I guess my question is... will my focus and muscle memory come back with a bit more time on the mat? I can't make up excuses for my poor performance, but Im amazed at how quickly I lose my grappling abilities.

All in all, this post is sorta just a self-help post by voicing out my concerns and hopefully allowing others to share similiar stories.

Yeah, theres always some rust when you go back to doing something you haven't done for awhile.

You'll probably get your skills back after rolling and training for a while.

im sort of in the same situation as you are in... havent been to a bjj gym in 2 months....

but started going to judo... on the ground i have enough ability to be good against higher belts, but even though i was holding my own, i realized how much my skill decreased

at least im in judo where my standing game will increase ten fold

im guessing the rust or whatever will go away after a bit more rolling..

Yeah they will come back. Everytime I take some time off I hate the first week back because I am not up to what I expect to be. But once you get past that first week it is all fun again.

Its because when you practise a specific thing, you get a knack of doing it. If you dont do it anymore and start to focus your attention on something else, you lose that knack. You will your skills back after practising more.

Ohhh man. Thats is soooo relative that certainly you know that before we could help you. Just train and then some more. Who knows? I hear you tho.

We all wanna ask that. Download Last of the Mohicans theme or 'I wanna be somebody'.

Stay cool.
