When RDA pulled out of 196 the UFC said Edgar was injured and couldn't accept the fight. With UFC 200 only 4 months after 196, I think that the UFC didn't want to risk Edgar. He would have to go back training very quickly after having an injury and with the number of opponents that have had to pull from McGregor fights the UFC have decided not to risk it.
I think Edgar has been told "how about McGregor in MSG and you don't have to rush back training after Surgery."
For Edgar it is win win: He is from Jersey and other than a fight against McGregor he has no chance of headlining a MSG card.
It is a win win for the UFC: they get a rematch of possibly their biggest PPV of all time ( personally I don't think it will beat UFC 100) and they hype up McGregor's return to featherweight even more.
It is win win for McGregor: he headlines UFC 200 and the first UFC card in MSG (Jon Jones may have something to say about that) which will earn him stupid money.
