I don't think a stance narrower than shoulder width is advantageous even for most athletes. The load sacrificed isn't worth the slightly extended ROM (compared to a deep "athletic squat") and since the posterio chain drives most athletic movements, I think shifting the majority of the load to those muscles as well as the hips (I wish there was some term that melded them with the posterior chain.... I think form now one the hips and posterior chain will be called the "being damn strong muscles" or BDSM).
