Why is it he is not a better or even elite grappler? Being Brazilian he surely had access to top trainers back in the day. Did he not put forth the effort or was he just not adept at it? His JJ has to be among the weakest of the top Brazilian fighters of his generation.

Maybe some things are just hard for some people to get a handle on, no matter how much they practice. The same could be asked like, how does jake shields be a pro fighter for all these years, AND train with the Diaz bros all this time but still can't box for shit?

Because Vitor relied on his striking. It was the thing that made him famous, especially when he knocked out Wanderlei. Oh yeah and same goes for Wanderlei. And Shogun.

So..

He's a good grappler. However I don't think he spends much time in his training camps working on his grappling.

Who would when you have knockout power in every limb, and hand speed that puts FLWs to shame? :D

Why wouldn't I try to become more well rounded, thus becoming better? Gee I don't know.

Dude, he can't train it, TRT-Rex has short arms...

.. let's be real, Vitor has high level BJJ skills.

If he got better off his back, he probably wouldn't have too much to worry about. Weidman showed the blueprint for strong wrestling>Vitor off his back JJ. When fights stay upright he's comfortable, so offensive grappling doesn't seem to be on his priority list at the moment

I have hardly seen footage of Vitor fighting on the ground, but he showed his offensive game when he went for the arm against Jones.
He was overwhelmed on the ground against a much bigger Weidman, and Jones subbed him after punishing him on the feet. He was subbed by Overeem, but I don't remember the fight/context.
I do not see any reason to claim that Vitor is not good on the ground.

-Belfort has only been submitted TWICE (2) in his 36 fight career that spans back to 1996 and across the globe.
-the 2 submissions were to Overeem (Euro ADCC qualifier something or another) and Jon Jones
-he was mounted by Weidman but short of the odd performance against Rockhold, Weidman was a reigning champ and great wrestler.
-he's done ADCC straight grappling and took on some prominent names

he outclasses nearly all his opponents in striking, why ask him to grapple? Only Jones forced him to grapple and he put Jones in the closest submission we've seen Jones in danger of. Rumble has was proficient enough standing to force Vitor's ground game and Vitor snuck in a RNC.

MMA is complicated, VItor has been around for the longest time now and he is a Gracie Jiu Jitsu Black Belt. But since his arrival at MMA you saw him greatly improve his striking. Event o this day, he is know one of the best kickers in MMA. His grappling was left a little bit unchecked, it's still good. But he def doesn't grind it out in training camps like Weidmen, Jacare, Rockhold or Romero.

Vitor isn't a terrible grappler, and not sure why you think all Brazilians should be great grapplers anyway.

For a real grappling-averse Brazilian top fighter, look at JDS.

His is a BB under Carlson Gracie and was a member of his fight team since 17. He knows the ground but would just rather KO people.

The issue is that you are trying to be a jerk instead of understanding what he was explaining to you.

Vitor had things that worked well enough for him. So he worked most on that, to keep his weapons sharp.
Some fighters are like this.

If he stopped spending time on speed/power or whatever he is doing now, to concentrate on grappling aspect of the game, his standing skills would not be as good.
He might be more well rounded, but the weapons that made him famous would be gone.

Vitor was a Carlson Gracie prodigy early in his life I believe
