Speaking as a non-boxing fan (I've been to one event live, Tye Fields at the River Cree Resort and Casino, and only watched part of a boxing match with my grandpa on TV) I think it's because they are ranked #1 and #2 as heavyweights and he's somewhere around #50 in the world.

i think i remember Vitali saying that he wasn't a big enough draw or something. I think James would have put up a better fight than some of the Klit brothers recent opponents though.

Toney basically fell out of the public view (and Top 10 HW rankings) after the 2 Samuel Peter fights.

    Strong name there Sir. :D

I think Toney not being a draw was a huge reason, But then again Both brothers have fought lesser known names.

I agree with Tropics, I think he would have put up a much better fight. It might have been more entertaining than some as well. I don't think we'll ever know. Toney doing well in the UFC does almost nothing for him in terms of getting a Fight with either brother, Unless He wins the title, Gains a massive following then starts talking shit to get the fight.. Maybe?

    Probably not.

Say what you want bout the Klit brothers, they've never really ducked a fight. Both brothers would have rolled on Toney.

Had Toney beaten Peter the second time around he probably would have gotten a fight with Wlad.

I really would have liked to have seen it happen with at least one of the Klitschkos.
Klitschkos both fought much lesser known opponents than James who does have a name amongst Boxing fans.
Former middleweight Champ (160lb) James proved he was relevant at Heavyweight.

I would have liked to have seen it for the sheer visual experience.

5'9" pudgy 230 lb Toney (former 160 lb Champ)
    6'6

You definitely aren't a boxing fan because James Toney could have easily gotten a fight with them if he performed better in his second fight with Sam Peter. Combine that with the fact that they are basically reaching for opponents. The James Toney you see today is old and way past his prime but the fact is even at this stage of the game the talent drop off is so dramatic after Wlad and Vitali that James has a shot against anyone else. The guys style adjusts well to age and calling him 50 in the world even now is just silly.

Losing to peter twice, and then looking horrible against oquendo doesn't earn you a title shot.

wlad klitchko offered james toney a fight right after wlad beat chris byrd for a second time james toney turned down the fight around the same time wlad offered shannon briggs a fight too and shannon turned it down.

now we got both james toney and shannon briggs running around crying that the klitchkos never offered them a fight.

shortly after they both declined shannon lost his wbo belt and james toney lost his chance at the vacated wbc.

I think cruiserweight Toney of the Jirov fight could beat Vitali, Wlad not so sure, faster, more technical and more powerful. I think you need power to beat wlad and James doesn't have it.

Chris Byrd has a stoppage win over Vitali Klitschko.
Vitali conceded on his stool in a fight that Vitali was winning all the way.

Chris was 6 foot even and turned pro at 169 lbs at 22 years old.
One year later, Byrd was fighting at Heavyweight.

Byrd didn't have a punch even at 169.

He knew the money was at Heavyweight, so he weight-trained to bulk up to about 210.

    A win's a win. 6', 210 lb Chris broke 6'7

Based on styles i could see James causing vitali all sorts of problems. Vitali is an accumulation puncher and really doesn't have the technique or fluidity to land a whole lot on james, who has faced bigger punchers and come through unscathed. Interesting fight. Wlad is a different matter, as i said Wlad's weakness is power and James doesn't offer a lot in that regard.

In any event i meant in that type of form, James hasn't had a top performance in years.

Go and watch the Byrd fight it offers a bit of insight.
