Why isn't there more talk about Jingliang's disgusting eye gouge?

I don't often get too bothered by fouls, but this one was so blatant and horrific I was kind of shocked the fight even continues. Massive respect to Matthews for his handling of it, but he was fully entitled to be outraged by it. It's no exaggeration to say he could have lost his vision in that eye.

I know he said it was heat of the moment, but I think he deserves a lengthy ban and possibly some psychiatric rehabilitation before he's allowed in the cage- if his instinct is to gouge eyes when he's in trouble then he shouldn't be allowed in a sport fight. This is a sport, not a street fight, and if I was a competitor I'd be refusing to fight a guy like him. Imagine taking him down and going for a choke- you'd be constantly panicking about your eyes getting wasted.

To me he's got that same issue Palhares had, which is great if you're fighting for your life, not so much in the UFC. The worst part is he was completely unapologetic afterwards, he didn't recoil in any way after being balls deep in his eye socket. The guy is one of the biggest cheats I've seen in the UFC.

Its like how Machida got a robbery decision against Anders, but when the person affected refuses to talk about it and brushes it off, its not going to get everyone else talking about it on their behalf.

Because Jake don't give a shit

I know man and I respect him for it, but on this one he actually should have.

It's like how DC (all credit again for this) said regardless of Jones popping for gear, it's still a loss in his eyes. That's an admirable attitude, but Jones still deserves a hefty punishment for breaking the rules. Acceptance from your opponent is definitely not enough to oversee blatant rulebreaking.

The ref did not handle that properly at all.

Should've been a point deduction at minimum, but honestly grounds for a DQ

this eye gouging was pretty bad, ref seen it and only tapped/lightly smacked jingliangs arm

I like Jingliang, but that was a disgusting foul and he should have been DQ'd and probably fined.

Dude should be cut. Fuck em.

You cant use the "in the heat of the moment" excuse when you're a professional fighter in a fight.

UFC already punished him....

By giving him 50K bonus.

Worst foul I've seen since the Chad Mendes's eye gouges that were also largely ignored coz it didn't effect the outcome.

Fouls like that really should merit a year ban at least, cowardly act.

agreed totally. he needs to be cut after that.
Imagine jones if he comes back. his opponents will be rendered blind.

Because the audience is too busy displaying their latent homosexuality in the i lof u luke shit tread and no one cares anymore about the sport.

People like Mathews who think they can just wave it off and say, "ah shucks, it's OK" are going to end up getting the sport re-banned in a lot of states.

It became mainstream because it was being treated like a sport. That wasn't sport, it was assault.

Disagree. What really matters is how much people like the fighters involved. That's the only factor that determines perception of any situation in MMA.

Machida is a legend, and Anders is a prospect. Additionally, Anders' workrate was so low in that fight that it could have legitimately gone either way.

A better example of what I'm talking about is Corey Anderson vs. Shogun. Anderson got jobbed in that fight and has complained about it several times, but nobody cares because fans like Shogun and think that Anderson is a joke.

If either Matthews or Jingliang were better known, then there would have been a stronger reaction to what happened.

Because reffing in mma has always been pitiful.

In Jumeau vs Abe earlier that night, the ref paused the fight at fighter's request for a non-existent eye poke, which he hadn't seen anyway, and had the fighter checked and the injury attended in a moment when the guy was in big trouble from damage from a legal strike. Then the ref proceeds to warn the other fighter for a foul that never happened.

A few hours later Matthews gets eyepoked and the ref just stands there contemplating. Then in between rounds he walks up to Jing and offers words of wisdom: "next time I take a point (or maybe I won't)."

What's there to discuss then, really? Most refs suck, that was just routine.

Matthews got the win.

But if i were his corner, i would've thrown in the towel immediately after that illegal guillotine escape.

Better to get your fighters eyes checked immediately and protest for an NC than to potentially end his career and vision letting him continue..

Two reasons:

1. He lost
2. Jake acted like it was nothing in the post fight interview.
