Not talking about a bunch of HS kids walking round with conceal and carry permits. I'm talking adapting physical education classes to focus on self defense activities: Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, BJJ, Judo....Etc.

I feel like it would have a beneficial effect on bullying in schools. I'd imagine a bully would be less inclined to pick on someone, if they knew that the person could defend themselves. Bullies are typically opportunists, they want the easy prey. Also it would be great from a fitness stand point.

I think I read somewhere that in the United Arab Emirates they were making it mandatory for school kids to train BJJ for like a 3-4 year window at some point in their schooling....I think it would be a great idea, honestly.

Thoughts?

I guess. Never know today.

I know that dodgeball is becoming a thing of the past because it favors athletic kids. I feel like anyone could take a self defense class.

Ever taken a class in any of those? You have to sign a waver acknowledging that you could be seriously hurt or die. Not exactly gonna go over very well.

You have to sign those to play school sports too.

I've been doing annual re-qualifications in use of force and defensive tactics for 20 years. The average person would benefit greatly from this.

I had to take some wrestling in PE. Other than on the occasional date I never had much use for it.

Which go over pretty well.

??? Are you arguing that optional scools sports are a thing that should exist? I am pretty sure they already do.

The thread is about making a self defense class mandatory.

I wish public schools had BJJ when I was a kid. If they allow Cheer Leading, something like BJJ should be allowed.

But as has already been stated, the true bullies would come out of the wood work, and find reasons to sue, in order to gratify their ego.

He is talking about PE classes which are not mandatory.

Because the patriarchy wants to maintain rape culture. Teaching people self-defense would defeat that.

if all the bullies are taking self defense too, then whats the point? and physical fighting in schools actually isnt all that common anymore.

The risk of injury, disabled kids, and "encouraging violence" are all reasons why stupid parents will never let this otherwise generally practical thing become reality.

Could start a little conspiracy theory --

Which side trades handouts to the poor for votes? Which side wants to disarm law abiding Americans? Which political side has inundated the education system? Why doesn't the education system teach money management? Why doesn't the education system teach self defense?

Follow the money -- by which I mean follow the pandering for votes.

Back in my day, we had catch-as-catch-can class right after candle making and animal husbandry

Nope, self-defense = victim blaming. Everything will be alright the moment we start teaching boys not to rape!

Football, cheerleading (no, really), wrestling...these are all activities where the same could happen.

Why would I say what I did in the OP, if I'd never taken a class in any of the arts listed? You don't see why that would be foolish?
