Why is UFC frantically trying to replace a co-main on an already stacked card?

The UFC's last minute circus matchups to save headlining events are understandable, since canceling those fights effectively cancel the card. But why is the UFC trying to get Brian Ortega (unarguably the less popular between Holloway and himself) to take some lame fights? The UFC is starving for up and coming talent, and they want to give this guy a match he didn't even train for?

The pressure to come up with a witty response for the first post is nerve racking. I choked.

Never a bad move to choke when unsure of what to do, it releases a lot of endorphins making you happy so you may think clear, keep it up, pun intended.

We have different meaning for the word "frantically" obviously

legit LOL

I got nothing either...only the rational (re: boring) thought that the UFC would like to avoid having to issue any refunds and prob feels that a good last-minute replacement fight may even generate additional hype?

I dunno...a witty response would have been better :(

Ortega should have taken Stephens fight. Max won't fight at 145 again. Ya'll see.

Because people paid tickets for a certain number of fights, because the time slot in the ppv provider, because contracts.

Chances are high Ortega just won't fight on this card and him and Max will be rescheduled for like Aug. or Sept..

P.S.: Ortega gains zero by fighting anyone outside of a payday. Wait for Max is the smart move.

The Ortega / Holloway fight is a big loss for this card and certainly the UFC knows it. I can only imagine that they want to keep Oretga on if possible because he's gaining alot of traction with fans and his appeal was a major factor. So, they're probably scrambling to come up with a replacement ala Khabib/ Iaquinta to keep any prospective ppv buyers who are on the fence to stay with their buying decision.

I dont knw about u but the ppv prices have went up to $65, so they better stack and keep stacking the card.

I suspect they think that a drop of PPV buys will occur regardless due to losing a co-main, and they're trying to minimize that loss as much as possible.

Keyword here is "gaining". It makes no sense to throw this guy in with a grizzled veteran. Frankie and Jeremy are fun to watch (which is why they should fight each other), but neither one of them are the future. This is a sport where even a fighter who is superior in every facet could get caught with 1 punch that puts them down (see GSP vs Serra). It wasn't such a big deal for GSP because everyone realized Serra got lucky as hell, but Ortega losing would be BAD.

This is the biggest event of the year, their showcase event anyway. The Fight Week event. They just want to make make it as good as it can be.

Because even though the card is still amazing a lot of people will just see a title fight cancelled and for casuals that don't know better won't think twice about passing it up now unless something is thrown together to fill the spot at least

I'm not advocating that he stay on the card, if I were him, I wouldn't. TS was trying to understand the UFC's motives, so I offered my opinion as to what it might be. Key word here is, "opinion"....
