Weidman, Jacare, Rockhold, Izzy, etc.

what is different about the jump from 185 to 205 that's makes it that noticeably harder to succeed?

I don't see this trend when fighters from other weight classes when they choose to move up in weight, but 185 guys seem to have a helluva time trying to adapt to 205

Cause its 20 pounds of pure muscles.
Ideally there should be 125, 135,145,155,165,175,185,195,205,225,265
But there is not enough talent in the whole world of 8 billion people.
Too bad sherdoggers are too rich and don't care to join the ufc, they would fill all the divisions with champions.

Is it??

A lot of guys have made the jump and become champion

Weidman, Jacare, Rockhold are bad examples becuase they are on the tail end of their careers.

Izzy's transtion wasn't bad at all. He had a competitive fight with the champion a division up. That is very impressive. People need to stop thinking in binaries. It's possible to perform well and still lose.

It's 20 pounds. It's the biggest jump from one weight class to another in mma. You can go from a Deron Winn to a Jiri Prochazka in one weight class.

I believe the reason is because they are mostly walk around at 210-215 lbs and cut down to 185 lbs but 205ers walk around at 230-240 and cut down to 205 lbs to compete. Bigger bone structure and a hell of a lot stronger. Randy Couture did it right by starting at HW and cutting down to LHW in 2003 to fight Chuck Liddell. BJ too when he went up in weight in 2004 to fight Matt Hughes.

That depends on you frame and how bad cut you had before, a lot guys had success with that move, mostly due to having bad MW cuts. As for reason why it’s tougher , LHW’s are basically HW who just prefer cutting weight, as most come in octagon 220 -230 lbs range and will just outmuscle Mw guys, good recent examples are Jan vs both Luke and Izzy

Jacare, Weidman, and Rockhold all did it at the end of their careers. Izzy is not even a big MW.

You're also leaving out guys who HAVE had success.

Thiago Santos, Anthony Smith for example

Jacare arguably beat the current LHW champion in his LHW debut while being old as fuck. That's more than good performance in my book. He did way better against Jan than Izzy did.

Because moving up to heavyweight while not triggering USADA is way harder if you don't just want to get really fat. And getting fat sucks for your health.

Bad examples. Rockhold, Weidman and Jacare were at the end of their career and they were put immediately against the elite fighters of LHW.

Anyway, size matters. You have to be noticeable better than the bigger opponent to beat them. Anderson Silva whopped Forrest Griffin because he was like 10 times more gifted than him.

Rumble 170 - 265
Thiago Santos 170 - 205
Joe Riggs 205 - 170
Yancy Medeiros 205 - 155
Sanchez 185 - 145
BJ Penn 145 - Open weight

Luke, Weirdman, Costa, Canon, they are around 205-215 on a fight night, 220-250 out of camp. But yea, you are right about the LHWs, they are just disciplined HWs who cut weight.

I agree, it's amazing how few legitimate heavyweights are out there, even Stipe could very possibly hit 205 if he were younger, DC obviously did, Fedor definitely could have, Velasquez, etc.
