Why is Men's Volleyball Not Cool In North America?

USA plays Russia in a qualifying game tomorrow. Just want to know why Americans have forsaken their men's Volleyball team?

I don't know, but I was talking to a badass volleyball chick a few years ago and watching her play was a trip. Her speed, grace, and power was super impressive on top of her size. I realized I probably haven't put enough stock in to the athleticism and too much stock in the uniforms.

If you haven't already picked up on the drift it's because it is associated with women in our culture.

It comes down to seasons. Volleyball season is in the Fall in American high schools. This is the same season as Football. So the boys went off to throw on the pads while the girls go bounce around the net.

Field Hockey is badass, too, but it suffered from the same cultural stigma via machismo. I don't mind machismo, in moderation, but it's too bad more American men don't appreciate sports like this. Volleyball players are the most impressive leapers in sport outside of the High Jumpers. They have superior vertical leaps to even the basketball pros-- especially countermovement.

Perhaps with the rise of awareness over head trauma these cultural boundaries are going to be renegotiated and shifted. But it seems to me that sports like Lacrosse are benefiting from this more than Volleyball. Makes sense. A lot of guys like to run. If you pin them down they feel bottled up.

Ironically, most people I've met distrust tall people who play basketball.

Although it's very competitive and gets intense, it seems more feminine than anything. Kind of like why no one goes crazy for men's gymnastics, but absolutely love the women's team.
