Are kickboxing bouts more fun to watch? I think the american audience would pay more attention when more weapons are involved. Who doesnt love a bloody match due to elbows?

Glory should get rid of that crappy unified rules and bring in Muay Thai but leave out the annoying music. Have viacom push it to the mass. Advertise everywhere and all the casual mma fans that dislike grappling will like it. Plus the boxing fans that are looking for something a little different will like it too.

And if the commission will allow it, dont use gloves but rather the mma glove/hand wraps that are seen used here...

I mean those muay boran type hand wraps will be a selling point on its own. Its just simply bad ass.

Kickboxing is just not catching on in north america. Changes needs to be made. Kickboxing/muay thai needs a ufc style monopoly to succeed. One org to rule it all. All the best fighters in one org.

Americans love violence...to a point.

Muay thai, for the most part, is just a little too far over that point to be mainstream yet. We like to see people get punched and kicked, but knees and elbows? That's just too much (swoons).

It's silly, but such is life.

The best FTR matches are in Thai stadiums anyway, and I'm pretty sure that the way they do it is the way they like it.

I personally have no interest in seeing experienced, world class fighters abusing people that not even the hardcore fans have heard of in promotions like Thai Fight.

Muay Thai is tradition. Music, Wai Kru and all this stuff is part of what makes it Muay Thai. I personally couldn't care less about that, but it is what it is to its enthusiasts (and the best fighters in the world in this discipline, which are Thais).

Let's derail this thread and instead gush about how awesome Yod Fairtex is!

Seriously, that guy is fucking mesmerizing to watch. Yes, I realize this wasn't a very high level opponent that he was fighting. But Yod proved how highly tuned his skills were by smashing this dude.

IMO, MT is like a culture that most Thai people can relate to, while most other people cannot.

Kickboxing is more like international sports, with heavyweight throw down, more action packed (IMO), and the fighter that most people in the world could relate to.

How long is clinching allowed in Muay Thai fights just out of curiosity?

Thanks for giving me the name of that guy. I had the honor of having a one on one hour with Jongsunan Fairtex in San Fran a few years ago.

Yod is really fun to watch. He's really got it all going on. That poor farang in there looked like he'd trained his ass off and was pretty good but just got blown apart.

Awesome fight.

I don't care to see what we Americans would do to MT over here. I like it in Thailand, where I think it belongs. I'm not against having it here but I think we'd really screw it up and I don't think there's a very big market for it, unfortunately. In a way I'm kind of glad, too. Nothing fucks something up like going mainstream.

Have you watched K-1/Gory and fights out of Lumpini and Rajadamnern? Which do you find more entertaining?

Pierre Andurand was interested first i purchasing K-1, but instead started Glory because he was interested in Kickboxing. He doesn't want a Muay Thai promotion.

FTR has clinching which is standing grappling that I don't think would be everyones cup of tea.

Caged Muay Thai already uses MMA gloves under FTR.

Glory is basically attempting to bring everyone under one roof. And I don't think the fact that it isn't catching on like wildfire has everything to do with people not liking it, but how the promotion has been managed. Long lay offs have really hurt their momentum.

It's when the referee determines that the position is stalled. No striking, no trips happening. If it looks stalled, the ref will break it up immediately. If it looks guys are striking (knees/bows) or advancing position for a trip or toss the ref will let that happen until it stops happening.

I think elbows are the main reason it goes on so much longer than KB. In MT, the clinch has that extra opportunity to do some work in clinch range.

I'm not an expert, though and I'm not reading out of some rulebook. My ideas are just based on watching fights. If I'm wrong, let me know.

Jesus. Awesome info, great post. Thanks.

What my mates say:
Annoying music
Slow place
Clinch too long
Scoring is complicated
Forgot to add the Wai Khru and all the traditions.

Scoring is kind of boring for traditional MT to be honest, unless you're a gambler.

Westernized point scoring and allow elbows/some clinch = perfect

what bang rachan said

plus

- 5 rounders that start at round 3....first a wai kru that takes ages and then 2 rounds of feeling out....it's just crappy for spectators/tv-viewers

but most of all.......there is basically no muay thai above 70 kgs....not even internationally....these midget weights are the most unpopular weights......it's a given fact that the heavier fighters sell better

there are a shitload of other reasons as well

Get some new rules on the way or enforce them right, breaking up the clinch from the first second sucks so much. If you really want a higher pace allow clinching if action is involved, i.e. straight knees.

Yokkao and Max Muay Thai do it and it is good

But look at MMA and its popularity. There certainly is a market for it. And i doubt it would get more bad publicity then MMA.
