Why is it public knowledge when a player is injured?

Listening to sports radio coming home from grocery shopping.

Sports reporter states that QB from Detroit will play today, but that he has torn tendons in his thumb.

Another team is without another player because of an abdominal injury.

So, why is this public information?

Isn't this against doctor/patient privacy laws?

Why can't a coach just sit an injured player and say nothing?

I don't want the opposing team to know that my running back sprained his ankle while playing soccer with his kid in the backyard.

Because when people aren't in the squad, some people assume there's some drama afoot with the manager/backroom.

Not to mention the confusion about what should be done with their kits.

When you are a public figure, even a minor one from a sports team, your expectations of privacy are FAR less than your average persons.

Plus, gambling.
