Why is it ok in MMA to turn around and run while in boxing it gets booed?

It's also frowned upon in amateur wrestling, penalized as passive or fleeing.

Anyway, it's also really okay with me, what Gus did a couple of times, to defend against Jones' low-shoot takedown attempts. And Jones has been guilty of that, too (though not in this fight).

It's just one of the interesting nuances of MMA, differentiating it from other combat sports.

Congrats, still-champ Jones! Congrats, toughest-challenger-yet Gus!

    GREAT FIGHT!

    Because Gus.

    U-S-A!

there was definately some matador stuff going on, and MMA is a more 3 dimensional game. Running in MMA is refusing to throw leather.

Whenever I see a post about "running" I have to remember that most posters on Sherdog don't have any fucking clue what it is.

Because no one is going to boo the guy that wants to stand and bang (running > leg grabs). People who run away from standing and banging still get heat (Condit Diaz anyone?). So it's actually based on the same factors as boxing boos/cheers.

If Jones ever turned and sprinted from an opponent like that he'd be flamed. (see: below)
Gus did it, and it's cool because he 'just wanted to bang'..

(I don't see a problem with a quick jog and reset, just pointing out the obvious double standard)

EDIT: Thanks for pointing it out that it has happened, and he was flamed for it. I forgot about the Rampage fight.

The strange thing about this fight is how many posters immediately following the fight and for a few days afterwards fought tooth and nail to defend Condit. It was one of the strangest things Ive seen at this forum. Once those mma experts went back to their holes in the ground Condit started to catch a little more heat.

Im convinced the UFC routinely uses shill posters at this forum to push their company line.

That performance by Condit was embarrassing. And the fact so many mma writers let Condit off the hook in that fight tells me plenty about the state of mma journalism too.

Thats a pretty standard defense to the low single. Jon was just persistent which led to protracted running.

if someone is shooting for your legs and you get an opening to break away,i would probably just take it instead of worryin about what sherdoggers think of it

Not so subtle attempt to take a dump on Alex.

Guess what? Your boy did it too, and far more blatantly than Alex ever did.

Jones already has turned his back from an opponent kind of like that against Rampage, and was flamed.

I have seen Gus flamed quite a bit for it elsewhere, but only a few times much here.

    I personally don't care.

    Yup.

Which is funny because MMA fans boo all kinds of shit that doesn't deserve to be booed.

in boxing, distances arent as necessary, you dont have to take like 8 steps away to get to a safe distance. mayweather ducked under canelos hooks a few times and took a few steps and nobody cared. theres no reason to really run. if they get too aggressive at chasing you, you can clinch for a reset

in wrestling its common to shuffle away (or the equivalent in a wrestling stance) to break a takedown attempt, especially singles, low singles and duckunders. also after hip heists and similar escapes. otherwise your opponent will just reshoot

i guess the point is, if its to avoid an opponents attack, and then you immediately reengage, nobody cares. its only when you continuously do it in order to stall, avoid engagements, run the clock and avoid action

^ See, bold. The rest is basically how I see things as well.

I've seen far more people defend Gus for it than speak negatively about it (here). Had Jones done it in this fight, I don't think it would be as widely accepted (for obvious reasons).

But, I also don't couldn't care less about what he/they did, as long as it's a rarity.
