Why not have a functioning system to accept immigrants? It's perfectly compatible in my mind to be open, non-xenophobic and accepting when it comes to immigration but have a set of rules at the same time.

i think that it is how some people have presented the argument for a border, that some people interpret as racist. when trump suggests that a large number of the immigrants are "rapists" whatever else, it rubs some people the wrong way, and understandably so.

The issue with Trump is that his layout of the problem is bigoted ("they are bringing rapists" etc.), and his proposed solutions to the problem are idiotic and unrealistic. Saudi Arabia is criticized heavily by leftists for their policies on immigration and human rights. Are you so deluded to think Western progressives dont recognize they are an oppressive theocracy? And Israel gets far more accusations of racism internationally than USA ever does. And there is pressure for Japan and South Korea to increase immigration and recognize their racist policies to foreigners.
