Why is it a big deal to be disrespectful after a fight, but not before?

I like to watch UFC fights, sometimes, but I'm far from the average sports fan. So I've a question to you guys. Why is it that people consider being disrespectful before a fight "ok", but it's "not ok" when done after a fight?

I understand why it's done. It's to make it easier for the fighters to deal with their enemies, with the fight, on a psychological level. I get it. But that doesn't make the disrespect itself any less, if done before a fight.

Let me put it this way. There are two neighbors. They are about to apply to the same job. Neighbor A has four options :

A ) Tell his neighbor "good luck, may the best win" before, and say "Im sorry, better luck next time" or "It's cool, you deserve it bro" after.
B ) Tell his neighbor "you don't deserve this job, I'm better than you" before, and say "Im sorry, better luck next time" or "It's cool, you deserve it bro" after.
C ) Tell his neighbor "good luck, may the best win" before, and say "Haha, I got the job, loser!" or "go to hell, you piece of shit" after.
D ) Tell his neighbor "you don't deserve this job, I'm better than you" before, and say "Haha, I got the job, loser!" or "go to hell, you piece of shit" after.

Neighbor A is the coolest dude, of course. But the question is, why do most sports fan consider neighbor B to be as respectful as neighbor A?
Why is neighbor C any worse than neighbor B?
What's the big difference between neighbor D and B or C ? Do you guys really see a difference between a guy that tells you to f--- off two times versus someone that does four times?

I could say that neighbor B is a devious guy trying to earn the job in underhanded ways. Or that neighbor C is a hypocrite. Either way, they show the same amount of disrespect. So why do you sports fan consider neighbor B to be any better than neighbor C ?

The fight is the arbiter of the prefight trash talk. All the uncertainty is over after the fight hence trash talk after is pointless just and looks dumb.

Cocky in prediction, humble in victory or defeat.

Still a lack of professionalism and an underhanded way to increase chances of winning ( Getting in someone's head rather than trying to win with martial skills alone ). GSP got a lot of viewers and he didn't trash talk before a fight.

Stakes are high, putting your life and well being on the line, some people will try every advantage they can get.

Pre-fight trash talk usually seems like an act to get heat. Post-fight usually seems like a genuine emotion. "Honorable samurai warriors from legend" don't act that way.

There's nothing to gain from acting like an asshole post fight. Before, you are hoping to get under your opponent's skin and affect their game.

Because after you fight with someone (especially if it is a long fight) there should be nothing else left to be tense or anxious about. Those several minutes of fighting is like several months worth of normal interaction...imo. Of course there are some exceptions, like Tito Ortiz.

Sportsmanship is paying respect to your opponent when the fight is over, is it really that hard to understand?

Why not be a sportsman from the beginning, and not make racial comments, insult people's children or wives and all that pathetic shit? Is this not just an excuse to justify pathetic behaviour from favorite fighters that are assholes?

Because the Stakes are high, putting your life and well being on the line, some people will try every advantage they can get. It works. It worked for Conor against Aldo and itll work again on someone else.

there's no audience to a job application, pre fight banter is part of hype building and marketing. Anybody in the industry should realize that. After the fight, trash talk only serves to demonstrate lack of sportsmanship

I hear you. The point I am making is fighters who would stoop that low are assholes, period. It is time for people to stop making excuses for fighters. Just accept that your favorite fighter has to be a dick, to even take it there. Promotion is not an excuse for any and all behaviours.

sez u buddy. This isnt a game, nor is it for the faint of heart.

Because most people have realized by now that prior to a fight, trash talking is used to hype the fight, in order to get more viewers and by extension, money. It's not really honest animosity. After the fight, there's really no more need for that, which is why it's seen as extra disrespectful when you're still shitting on your opponent, especially after you've won. Perfect example here being Ronda not shaking Miesha's hand after beating her.

Exactly. I think for awhile there were fighters who would get honestly offended by the trash talking. Silva/Sonnen comes to mind. I think by now though everyone realizes it's just part of the advertising package and that it can lead to fatter paychecks for everybody.

Pre fight trash talk is about:

1. Hyping the fight.
2. Getting inside your opponent's head.
3. Putting yourself in the right state of mind.

Post fight trash talk serves no purpose other than gloating or excuse making.
