So with recent talks of a 165 division, which if you raise welterweight to 175 I think is a pretty good idea...at least compared to the other new weight classes like women 125 &145, I think I see the big picture.

GSP was on the MMA hour saying he wanted to fight but only for something that would increase his legacy, he then went on to dismiss pretty much every fight Helwani could think of including the (I hate the fucking term) money fight with McGregor. So...what can they put together that would improve his legacy? An interesting question which leads to another fighter who only wants a big time fight with big money..

Lets be honest the shine is coming off McGregor, I know he just broke all records with Mayweather...but so did Pacquaio before him and no-one gave a shit about his next fight. McGregor is one loss away from, well, not irelavence, but obviously that term is relative, certainly the casuals will not be there if he keeps losing.

So.....the obvious solution is GSP V McGregor for the first 165lb title, the two biggest draws in the sports history with the backing of their home nations competing to be the first, and probably only, 3 division champion. There is not another fight the UFC could make that would draw this kind of audience and money i.e the money they need to pay either of these guys to get in the cage.
It suits GSP's legacy narrative and it suits Conors penchant for preferring to fight the baddest people because, fuck it, you win you're a legend, you lose? well...the other guy was always the favourite.

I would bet heavily this fight will happen on these terms this year.

(And GSP wins)

50 Cent could cut down to 165. Keep that in mind...

It's fine to have a 165 division but there will be too many vultures trying to swoop in for the belt like what you described.

I think a 165 lb division makes a lot more than sense than a women's 145 lb division that was made solely for one fighter. You have a lot of guys like Khabib, RDA, Kevin Lee, Masvidal etc. who would benefit greatly in having that a division like that. However the cost of creating that division would be that the LW and WW divisions wouldn't be as stacked as a percentage of their talent pools will decide to compete in the new 165 lb division, the UFC can counteract this by signing a lot more new talent in all three divisions.

If anybody has the leverage to get the UFC to create a new division it's Conor. Given that Conor has said he wanted to fight Frankie for the 165 lb belt it's clear that this is something that has been on his mind and we may finally see this division come to fruition now.

Why do you guys keep making threads about a 165 pound division? Did Dana White or someone in the UFC even mention something about that?

Some of you sure like to speculate

You're gonna get more guys hopping between 155, 165, and 170 than between my mom and sister on a weekend.

As long as they also make a 157.5, 160, 162.5, 167, 171, 183.9 and 191.6 divisions as well, I am down with it.

165 division is stupid.

McGregor fighting anyone not named Tony or Khabib is stupid.

Probably will never happen but i would like to see GSP drop his old fat ass to 155 and get a proper starching from Mcgregor

He would have to fight Nate to get a shot at champ champ.

Luckily Nate is only twice as big as GSP.

I don't have time to read the whole post but f it make another division like boxing every few pounds.

there will be no legend. they would essentially win a title in a division that had never have a single fight in the history of the ufc, maybe in the history of the sport. the title would be meaningless unless defended a good couple of times (so if a fluke happened and if mcgregor won the title, he won't be a legend because he wouldn't ever defend anyway)

I think a 165 division would be great, 155 and 170 are very deep divisions and could definately deal with people moving, these are also pretty rich divisions elsewhere, so talent could easily be bought in.

I dig your point about McGregor fighting Tony or Khabib but honestly? I'm kind of over McGregor being a legit fighter, he is exciting and draws fans but he has no interest in defending titles etc, like it or not, and I don't, right now he is the UFC....though I think one or two more losses and that changes.

Let Tony and Khabib do their thing at 155, at least until they move up as they are both big guys and let Conor and GSP bang bro. I think this is the fight the UFC needs, they are in a slump and badly need to get eyes back on the product.

Lets stop having McGregor promoting Burgers and himself and get him back to promoting MMA.

Fair point but every belt needs a first champion, Jose Aldo is a legend in a division the UFC created for him if we want to go down that path. Ultimately someone must be first and 165 could be a very rich division
