Why doesn't Romero use his wrestling?

With a wrestling pedigree like him ( World Champ in Freestyle, Olympic Silver medal etc) You would think he would make wrestling his bread & butter. But It's just that he almost forgot how to wrestle. I mean like WTF? Not a single attempt of takedown. I was quite baffled.

Not that I would complain. As an Issey fan I am happy with the outcome so Iwhy would I ? Also it kinds of justifies my earlier opinion where I said Issey had nothing to worry about Yoel's wrestling. And that prediction was 100% right on the money.

He has the best TDs in MMA history when he makes a concerted effort to get them (Tavares, Lyoto, Weidman, Kennedy) but he doesnt have very good top control. If he gets guys down he doesnt have the top game or BJJ to keep it there and advance positions or work subs. Its not that its nonexistent but its not at a high enough level against top guys. Plus the man is 42 years old now i dont think he has the cardio to really wrestle anymore for long. Only time he did was the Tavares fight when he dominated him for 3 rounds with wrestling, really the only fight in his career that looked like that and he was in his mid 30s back then. Theres a reason he has to conserve energy for his style and explode.

He worries alot bout gassing - doesnt want another stoolgate. The few times he clocked Israel and had him turning or running he really didnt try hard enough to trap him or keep blitzing. Pure counter fighter now to the extreme.

I know wrestling is extremely taxing but how do you explain a 40 years old Cormier who throws everyone around like a toddler effortlessly but not an Olympic silver medalist Yoel who had a better record in wrestling.

DC just turned 40. He was in his late 30s when we last saw him fight

Against Stipe he wrestled the 1st round and never went back to it and many questioned why and its likely b/c he knows hed gas out. He didnt try take Anderson down in the 3rd when he easily couldve, didnt try to take Gus down after the 1st, etc etc

And Daniel has much better top control than Yoel. Yoel was never much of a top game guy
