everytime I tune into the UFC hype machine Joe Rogan and company always have there head up the Gracie's and BJJ arse. If Maeda never went to Brazil to teach Catch the Gracie's would have never been relevant. Where is the respect for Billy Robinson and Karl Gotch? Catch has proved to be superior to BJJ! Saku vs Rocye, Barnett vs Gracie etc.
All we hear about is.. his BJJ is world class etc. Its time for people to understand the strong style
Catch is slowly dying. Really unfortunate. Actually almost dead. Where the hell can you learn catch nowadays besides instructional DVDs?
B/C Rogan belongs to the school of "I AM PUSSY" Remember that one time his stupid friend sorta almost maybe beat a Gracie? But nope, Gracies are still "great", yea right
In a nutshell, wrestling with submissions. It's a little more to it then that though. A lot of chokes and leg locks.
BNB, wasn't Billy Robinson a Brit? How come Catch wrestling never really caught on in England and why are so many Brits weak in wrestling in general?
They really like boxing and are too civilized to roll around on mats trying to make someone else say cheerio?
I'm sorry, is this 10 years ago? I feel like this is a thread I would have been reading when I was first lurking on the forums. As for the "hype machine" and promoting BJJ, that is obvious. Between BJJ and Catch Wrestling which has more practitioners and schools? Which is more easily recognizable to the layman?
Know that rule where if a BJJ specialist has ur back ur all but screwed? That rule didn't apply to Saku. Most often he was most dangerous when his back was taken. Case in point, the Renzo fight.
Small joint manipulation too - 'catch as catch can' basically meant anything goes. It's actually a pretty 'dirty' style of fighting. Break fingers and stuff...
Didn't it start off in wrestling matches in traveling carnivals that went to town to town challenging the local tough guys?
That's my understanding. How would you be, fighting one of those guys and having your fingers broken...
