hi all,

as of August, Mrs. Clinton enjoyed overwhelming support amongst black Americans. according to Gallup, 80% of black americans had a favorable view of her, compared to 23% for candidate Sanders.

why is this?

is it because over 90% knew who Mrs. Clinton is, compared to only 33% for Mr. Sanders? Larry Harris Jr. at Huffpo suggests that black Americans simply suffer from a lack of information.

is it because that black voters are, in the end, more pragmatic as a people than the white electorate in Iowa and New Hampshire, viewing the incrementalism that Mrs. Clinton touts as a more reasonable course to pursue than the revolution that candidate Sanders is espousing?

is it because of the achievements of the Clinton family to advance the economic well being of the black americans?

with South Carolina coming up, i was curious how posters here in the WR see this phenomenon.

Trigger warning: FEELZ maybe hurt

For the most part, the black community does not consume corporate news media. The media = "The Man".

Edit: Saw the most interesting poll numbers last night. Apparently 40-59 is the age group of black Americans Sanders does the worst with. Unlike White Americans, Sanders actually does better with 60+ year old black Americans, than the lower age groups.

What is a black American? I am not familiar with that term.

clearly they don't know who he is. or else, promises of free/socialist things would spur him to the top in a heartbeat

I honestly don't know either...

I mean, Bernie Sanders has been on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement since day one.

Someone else already mentioned it, but maybe many Black Americans associate Hillary with her Husband, often dubbed the "First Black President."

Not sure. She was a self-described "Goldwater Girl" in 1964, and Barry Goldwater voted against the Civil Rights act. Bernie was active in the civil rights movement in the early 60s, and was arrested for protesting segregation. Clinton would change her political ideology a few years later, but Bernie has had the same views since the late 50's.

just one of those unexplainable things like Newport cigarrette ads.....we all know whom mainly smokes those, but ever peep an ad for them? almost always a yuppie white couple in like sailing clothes and boatshoes......

hi Hunter,

well, that does seem to be a possibility. as i said, a 2/3 of black americans really had no idea who Mr. Sanders was last august.

Equally if not more important is the fact that she's associated with Obama, having been part of his Cabinet.

Re. bolded
I think this is true.

Here is another HuffPo article, from yesterday, saying Black people should think twice before voting Hillary.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/hillary-clinton-black-voters_us_56ba797fe4b08ffac12328f0

On a sidenote, HuffPo was a big time cheerleader for Hillary last year and rarely carried articles unsympathetic to her BUT I noticed lately there have been articles popping up that are critical of Hillary.

The Clinton years is seen fondly by Blacks so they support Hillary. The influential and big time Black leaders supported her over Obama early on in 2008 . It was the Clinton's racially charged criticism of Obama that started to turn the tide.

hi Logicalinstanity,

well, what were Mr. Clinton's contributions to the well being of black americans?

i'm talking about achievements besides the record breaking incarceration rate of black americans, or the 42% unemployment rate amongst non college educated black men.

hi Selukrid612,

fair enough.

what were Mrs. Clinton's achievements as Sec of State which advanced the issues of black americans?

The Sec. of State deals mainly with foreign affairs and I guarantee you the average black voter has no idea what she did or did not do during her time there.

The polls I've seen haven't just limited it to "black voters".
It's the "Bernie Bros" (young white males) versus everyone else.

hi Logical,

he may have been on the front lines from day one, but...well, the civil rights movement was a long, long time ago.

it may be that outside of Vermont, many black southerners just don't know who Mr. Sanders is.

but still...if black americans see the primary justification for supporting Mrs. Clinton as "she was married to Bill"....hmmm. that's seems kind of thin, to me.
