Why does everyone keep saying Silva is faster than Weidman?

I didn't see that at all. Weidman was throwing faster puncher, he was reacting way faster too, Silva was always 1 step behind in both fights. That takedown in their second fight was instant, Silva was almost down before he realized Weidman had his leg. I don't want to argue about actual movement and strike speed, like they are sprinters or something, it's hard to calculate that in a fight with two top tier professionals at MW. In terms of reaction time, the kind of speed that matters in a fight, Weidman was on another level.

I think they were saying it because Silva's leg kicks were so fast. I mean he is The Spider, he kicks so fast that not even the top strikers can check his kicks effectively or avoid them, let alone a wrestler. Oh wait...

I'd still say Silva is faster. Weidman just did really good at managing the space and setting the grounds for the exchanges. The fight was fought on Weidman's terms.

Watch there first fight. Silva was clearly faster.

we hardly saw any standup fight

I thought Silva's speed was superior.

Hands were faster.

I thought weidman did a better job controlling distance with foot work, avoided strikes with a great escapability and head movement.

Also, I think Weidman's anticipation was excellent.

Silva is faster.

Weidman just fought smarter.

Silva has faster hands and faster kicks. Both are light on their feet and not flat-footed.

Silva's crescent kick in the first fight was very fast. Weidman just managed distance very well. Weidman is a lot more intelligent in the cage than he's given credit for.

Judging by his speed in their two fights, Silva hasn't lost a step. Weidman really is a bad match-up for him.

it's really a shame that we didn't get to see more unfold in the 2nd fight.

personally, i thought their speed looked pretty equal. Weidman has some great reflexes, and is so well rounded he will be very tough for anyone to beat.

and as for Anderson, it's amazing how that guy can move for his age. sure, he got caught being sloppy and arrogant in the first fight, but when he was all business in the rematch i thought he looked as fast as ever.

I mean Silva's probably been training muay thai 10 years longer than Weidman. so of course Silva is a lot more fluid than Weidman, but i don't think their speed is far off.

exactly my thoughts. weidman isn't faster, but it doesn't matter because he compensates with his skills and training.

nailed it

probably because he is. Did you see the super slow 1,2's silva was thowing in the second fight. He looked fast compared to forrest, and so do I.

i dont remember fantastic footwork but the rest i def agree with - and im not saying you're wrong, i just dont remember it

Umm...because Silva is faster. He has always had "not the best" takedown defense.
