He was mostly considered a joke celebrity before he ran for president. Someone a lazy hack comedian could just mention ("So ... Donald Trump") and get a few laughs.
Yeah, more or less. I look at it like Rodgey Dangerfield becoming president, but Dangerfield was actually able to make it as a comic rather than just as an amusingly eccentric rich guy. Trump is one of those guys who, if he hadn't been born to money never would have been anything - but nonetheless, he is something, and something that prior to his presidency wasn't reviled. In fact, I'd say it was accepted with amusement.
Nonetheless, I would be lying if my previous engagement with him, limited thought it may have been, wasn't "Oh, it's that guy" as I chuckled seeing him in things like Home Alone, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, or having some outrageous statement of his plastered on a headline.
