why do you like mma?

Hey, @sweetviolenturg why do YOU like fighting?

I've always been attracted to the visceral response that a good fight brings me. I should give you the cool version & tell you that I first noticed it while watching ENTER THE DRAGON at the drive-in when I was a kid. But, in reality, it was while watching the old Elvis movies that I watched with my mom when I was little that I first noticed it. Every last one of those things would have a fight scene in them & they never failed to excite me. I enjoyed the violence.
However, it was the fight scenes in ENTER THE DRAGON that got me turned onto the martial arts. After which I begged my parents to allow me to begin studying them.
Unfortunately, I never found real satisfaction during five years of training in Karate, Judo & Tae Kwon Do. I earned some nice colored belts but point fighting & learning forms didn't do it for me. Then, I began watching boxing on television & I became an instant fan. Not only that but I wanted to participate. So, my parents found me a local amateur club to begin training at & shortly thereafter I began my amateur career. And, after that first bout in which I stopped a kid by the name of Pierre Shannon in the third round, I knew I'd finally found my niche.
Fighting gave me that same visceral thrill as watching those old movies & watching the fights on television only amplified ten times over. So, after about 40 fights I turned pro & in the process began training at a hybrid boxing/kickboxing gym. So, in between training for my fights, I went back to my roots a wee bit by crosstraining in kickboxing. Which is how I met my buddy from my hometown of Buffalo, Kevin Rosier. He helped me train for my black belt in kickboxing & arranged for my lone kickboxing bout vs the Canadian champion Jersey Long. Which was supposed to just be a pro exhibition bout but it turned into a fight along the way as they sometimes tend to do & it was scored a draw in his hometown.
Anyhow, I kept in touch with Kevin over the years & he called me up one day in November of 1993 to tell me about a tournament that he'd just signed up for called the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He was a multiple time world kickboxing champion as well as a pro boxer & he was absolutely convinced that he was going to win. So, he told me to be sure to order the PPV to watch him do it. So, I did & the rest is history. That was UFC 1 & I was immediately hooked. Especially since Kevin won his first fight by knocking out Zane Frazier. Unfortunately, he broke his hand by doing so & went in against Gerard Gordeau damaged goods & got KO'd. Of course, Royce Gracie put on a BJJ clinic to win it & from that point on I was a huge MMA fan as well as a boxing fan.
These days, I'm a combat sports fanatic & my weekends are pretty much devoted to watching the fights. Even after all this time, they still bring the same reaction & of course, now that I'm long retired from the ring, I live vicariously through the fighters on screen.
So, if you've somehow made it this far, that's how & why I watch the fights.
Apologies for the ridiculous length.
Peace.

why do you love this game?
just wondering.

go.
The thrill and excitement an excellent, close fight creates. The first match I ever saw was on facebook, somehow I found it scrolling through videos. It was Tim Boetsch Vs Yushin Okami, and it was titled "The best comeback in the history of MMA!" So, out of curiosity, I watched it. Just something about Boetsch completely demolishing Okami and emerging dramatically victorious after getting beat on for 2 rounds got me hooked.

Apologies for the ridiculous length.
Great post
I love a good fight since I remember, so do many people in my family (my nephew wants to be a fighter, he posted some stuff from my account some time ago)
Anyway, peace to you too

it's the oldest and most natural sport... two men fighting to prove who is alpha, before the UFC I liked WWE, boxing and kickboxing. With the introduction of MMA, I follow wrestling, BJJ, Muay Thai, and Judo.... I like seeing two men fight to see whos the best... and with MMA/UFC/whatever, we get the answer

Fucking violence my dude.
Also getting a chance to see two high skilled fighters come up with a gameplan how to win.

Because im not gay.

Thanks, bro. Have a good one.

because I love martial arts. I was watching technique videos of every martial art even in the dialup days. Just fascinating. Aikido, hapkido, judo... trying to figure out what kind of gym is the best.

then when downloading porn like 2 decades ago I accidentally downloaded a ufc knockouts sherdog highlight and saw Gary Goodridge in a gi had the crucifix and had that iconic finish. almost positive it was the first highlight in the video. and I was off to the races.

Anderson Silva pulling off a triangle choke on Chael Sonnen with seconds left on the clock of a championship fight. Then finding out Anderson Silva came into the fight with a rib injury and Chael Sonnen tested positive for almost every PED that was tested (I am probably exaggerating). LOL

Tge wmma and comraderie of sweaty neck beards on sherdog comforts me

I love combat sports and mma is the best of them all

why do you love martial arts?

the second part of your answer is very interesting.
Why is it a never ending source of energy?
and why is it a never ending source of knowledge?
Since the young age I was always looking for deeper explanations at whatever I was involved in and wasn't satisfied with short answers that doesn't make me understand how the things work and stuff... so I fell in love with martial arts when I realized it's much more than I thought it is at first. I am also guided by mindset that everything is interesting if you go into it deeply enough.

Martial arts have many intricacies, you can spend a lifetime uncovering it only to find out you're at the beginning again. Just looking at jiu jitsu from the outside you can see how one move can counter another one and when you commit yourself into it you become vulnerable for something that you haven't been before, but you can't be twice at once if that makes sense. :D It's like a circle and circle, as we know, have no ends. That's why I said it's like a never ending source for learning. I always get excited when I notice and learn new things so for me it's a drive (even tho it's not my profession).

WITH North-South positions!
I think he blew his wad, Joe!

Because it's more of a thrill than any other sport, especially huge championship fights

Plus I don't like team sports
that's how I was until I discovered hockey 4 years ago. used to hate all team sports.

I needed a new sport though when mma fighters started fighting once a year. Kills excitement.

Because who cares if you can win in a game of football or baseball

Yep there are black belts and there are BLACK BELTZ.

There are black belts that can completely school other black belts and making them look like whites. That's always fascinating to me. It's like that other guy dedicated his life to exactly the same as the other. What the hell makes him so much better. because in jiujitsu it truly is just technique. There is no luck whatsoever. It's raw.

I like it because unlike other sports even guys like CM Punk can go in and compete in the big leagues with zero experience, I also love how the fighters are basically slaves now. Also combat sports (especially MMA and boxing) are the only sports where people would actually pay to see 2 celeberities with zero experience face each other. Nobody would want to see Bieber have a tennis match with Tom Cruise but it would probably do good ppv numbers as an MMA match.
