Seriously...WTF was up with Maynard last night. And you can usually pick at least 1-2 guys from every card and point that out. "king" Mo another good example and Guillard and Rockhold etc. etc. etc.

You'd think in 2013 with years of sports evolution and boxing meaning further implemented into MMA that a simple concept of "keep your hands up" would be drilled into every fighters mind. Unless your Anderson SILVA kee your hands up.

Yep, what do they all got in common?

i know this is an extreme and a quite silly idea, but it entered my mind last night...technically a ref could stop the fight if you are not "intelligently defending yourself," what if they just started giving tko loses to showboaters? you drop your hands and stick your chin out, you lose!

i know, i know...

I could be wrong but it might be more accepted in MMA because of the threat of take-downs. Just look at wrestling stances and whatnot.

Besides, even elite pro-boxers don't keep their hands up all the time, it's about implementing your own personal style and how you can break away from or get away with breaking the convention if it's working for you.

Good points.

Pretty sure that is exactly what Robert Whitaker was doing to counteract his opponents TD strong style.

Robert Whittaker is smarter than everybody

You keep ONE hand down and then you KO the wrestler ... It'll be the new spinning shit and everyone is going to do it

Sometimes it`s part of the strategy, like Whitaker vs Colton. His left hand was very low to stuff TDs cause he clearly knew Colton could not KO him.

That`s not something anyone should do against a power puncher though.

I loved his gameplan.

Mo didn't get KO'd because his hands were low. High hands doesn't necessarily mean good boxing.

It's a shitty attemp at the Philly shel style , employed by Floyd , I don't think there's anyone in mma with the skill set to do it properly yet

This notion that you have to have your hands up to defend yourself is bullshit. Some fighters rely almost exclusively on footwork and head movement to not get hit. Not getting hit is defending yourself.

It's easier to move your head quicker when your hands are lower because your centre of gravity is lower. I'm not saying that this is the way everyone should fight but this style definitely works for a lot of fighter in MMA and boxing.

When a shot lands on this type of fighter though, the commentator usually points out that it was "because his hands were low". This does my head in.

When Brad Picket (who holds his hand up) was getting getting lit up and landing virtually nothing on Eddie Wineland (holds his hand low) all Rogan kept talking about was how risky it was that Wineland had his hands low and how he should keep his hands up! WTF? It didn't seem to register that the guy with his hands up was getting his face turned to burger meat. If Wineland changed his style and kept his hands higher, I bet he'd get hit way more!

Lol, you know nothing.

The Philly Shell didn't invent the one-hand down style nor is it exclusive to it.

I came here to say this. Thank you.

Someone already said it, but whittaker used it well to stop the td. It is a somewhat high risk move (or can be) but the payoff is a greater security against the td. Also, most guys are not used to seeing punches from that angle. Dude's eye was all kinds of messed up, along w him not being able to get a td because one underhook was always waiting for him if he shot

it created some diverse angles when you change the level of your hands

Maynard still in Guida mode. He thought he was secure since he just saved 15% off his car insurance, and his last match was so easy even a caveman could do it.

Cause it's MMA and not boxing? you keep your hands way the hell up next thing you know you're gonna be on your back...

Sometimes guys have their hands low because of the threat of a TD as other posters mentioned....think how Mirko got KO'd by Randleman and Gonzaga like that
