Why do people say Jones wins by size advantage, but no one said the same about Gus?

Because Jones and Gustafsson uses his reach in a way Jones does not.

Gus likes to stand in the pocket with shorter guys, a position that diminishes the importance of reach while Jones tends to stay at length and only move into the center if he plans to clinch up or take his opponent down. I guess that is why people feel more apologetic about Gustafsson's reach. He does not seem to use it so apparently as often as Bones does.

It's mostly because Jones has looked so dominant and really put the hurt on some guys on the floor. His reach, coupled with his terrific ground control has made some fights look like mismatches. The fingers out, arms out defense also isn't universally loved. Basically, Jones controls when the fight happens in most matches.

Gustafsson has looked very good, but he never looked outside of the realm of a good opponent. If Gus fought Shogun with nothing but jabs and really utilized his reach to neutralize Rua's game, I think people would have more of a problem with that fight. He actually kind of brawled instead, and despite winning, probably didn't look as good as he could've.

It's kind of like with Struve (who has accumulated a pretty big fanbase) but not as extreme. If Struve really used his reach and size to its potential, he'd probably get a lot of hate because of how some of those fights would end up looking.

I personally don't have any problem with Jones. Despite being a demon on the ground, he's fought plenty of guys in the stand-up, he uses high-risk techniques (he usually tries to use them at times when they're low-risk, but that's just what a great fighter does), and he goes for the finish.

Jones said it wasn't his size and his reach that gave him an advantage. We know this is not accurate now as he fought someone that is his size. If you want to fight with Jon Jones at heavyweight, you better have a very high level of skill or be his size or bigger. This is nothing new. We learned this wih Brock Lesnar.

Because everyone hypes us Jones as this p4p goat when he is only fights a bunch of mws. He got his ass whooped fighting someone his size. His style was pretty much neutralized bexause of that.

Aside from the Davis fight (where Gustaffson was winning before that ill advised TD attempt), this was by far Gustaffson's toughest fight. Gus has had the height and reach advantage in every other fight, but looked beatable against Jones, where he did not have both advantages. Was he also exposed? Should he move to HW for the sake of fairness in competition?

Its simple its because Jones is that good and the haters cant stand it and hate to accept it, and ofcourse the biggest reason is because Jones is black ( yea the race card bitches which is called = the truth ) so they will never give him props, it will always be Jones fault and he will always be blamed for something.

This is a perfect example of it, If Jones said the sky is blue the shertards would say no its not.

Exactly, I dont exactly think its a coincidence that Rashad and Bones are two of the most hated guys on Sherdog.

When Jones beat Shogun, people said Jones won because of size advantage.

However, when Gus beat Shogun, people never mentioned Gus' size advantage over Shogun.

Double standard?

Maybe he doesn't take advantage of his size/reach like Jones does in his fight? I don't know. Anyway the criticism is stupid anyway. Palhares wins because of his jitz.

Naah Gus is just likable.

Because Jones beat the crap of former legends in their prime (other factors as well as we've seen on this forum)

Haters wish to hate

this is the correct answer.

About 90% of the criticism is sadly 'haters gonna hate' and nothing more.

When you are building a legacy on the backs of some of the most beloved fighters in MMA history you will gain a dedicated hate group. Edgar and GSP earned a loyal BJ hate group who lives to see them lose. Jones has had to walk thru or over the legend of so many great fighters to accomplish his goals and that will bring him eternal hate from those fan bases.
