Why do people say Aldo made his career off beating short stocky wrestlers?

Jose Aldo - 5'7

Mark Hominick - 5'8 striker
Korean Zombie - 5'9 striker
Cub Swanson - 5'8 striker
Kenny Florian - 5'10 well rounded fighter (no wrestling background)
Richardo Lamas - 5'7 wrestler (same height as Aldo)

Yes Aldo's biggest name wins are over shorter wrestlers in Edgar, Mendes and Faber, but it's not his fault they were the most successful guys at FW at the time. Is it not just revisionist history to say short wrestlers are all he can beat?

I don't see anybody going that extreme on either side, only you.

But it is true that Aldo never beat GREAT strikers, some good ones like the powerful Mendes and the smaller Frankie Edgar who has good boxing skills. But the fact remains that Jose got stopped by the two best strikers he has faced so far.

Umm,, dont forget Faber.. It was one of my favorite Aldo fights and arguably one of his biggest wins..

I've definitely seen the "Aldo made his career beating short stocky wrestlers" comment multiple times otherwise this thread wouldn't be a thing...

Well I think the point is that Aldo's style was engineered to beat the dominant style at that time: wrestle boxers. Many of those other fights weird stuff happened too, like Aldo almost getting finished by Hominick and KZ getting a freak injury. Conor/Max/TJ style was the antidote to Aldo/Barao's style, just as Aldo/Barao's style was the antidote to the wrestle boxer style.

MMA is the closest thing to rocks, paper, scissors that you will find.

Aldo got wrecked by the two guys he fought that had length.

Because who are saying that only knows "McG era"

Aldo haters gonna Aldo hate.

Jose Aldo has one of the best resumes in MMA history. The GOAT will be back.

1. Korean Zombie lost every single round of that fight. He was going to lose regardless.

2. Hominick got his ass whooped until the very last round, where he couldn't even ground and pound a gassed Aldo

3. Barao and Aldo do not have the same fight style AT ALL. Just cause they were both teammates doesn't mean they had a similar fight style

They both have great TDD and prefer to strike? But other than that yeah there are some noticeable differences.

Er, um... KZ and Florian are both the same height or taller than Conor with equal reach.

Kenny had one foot in the grave when he made 145 pounds. He looked like death with no strength or speed, and he also tried to wrestle Aldo.

And KZ was giving Aldo trouble.

Thanks for playing.

I see it all the time.

Short of his chin, Hominick is a pretty damn good striker. He just broke very quickly at the end.

To be fair, KZ gave everyone trouble. He was definitely his toughest fight outside of Conor and Max.

That statement is not the same as "Aldo never beat strikers"(which is what you implied is the statement used by people. The thread-title is a cover-up) is it?

And none of those wins were as good as his victories over Mendes, Faber and Edgar. Those are the best fighters he beat and they're short wrestlers.

I think a lot of people forget that its relative to the time period. Older seasoned fighters slow down. Younger fighters do get better. Its really easy to be jaded and say ohhh all those fighters he beat suck now, or they aren't good anymore therefore they were never good back when they fought.

Aldo was kicking Max's ass for round 1 and 2. So its not as if it was some blowout. Aldo's chin, and fight IQ has slowly degraded over time. Kz gave him a little trouble (you can tell he at least felt the punches), Mendez rocked him, then Conor Ko'ed him, then Max TKO'ed him.

That sort of pattern you always see when fighters are on the down slope. It doesn't remove what they did their entire career. It will happen to max too in time and conor (if he ever defends or fights again)
