Social Why do people need horror movies ?

All fiction is a way for us to explore different aspects of life so that we can better appreciate humanity. That's why, when the writing is bad, we say "it's boring," because it isn't doing anything for us as far as understanding life any better. This might sound unnecessarily philosophical, but it is just how we are without consciously thinking about it when we pick up a movie or a book.

Are they not informed about sad and awful things happening on a daily basis , isn't that more then enough horror ? How can it be that there is an audience and movie makers interested to make them while there are still so many real life horror stories ?

So you just watch chick flicks and musicals? Nothing where any of the characters die? Nothing sad?

It's the visceral thrill of undertaking trauma, in somewhat safe capacity -- similar to eating spicy foods, riding a roller coaster, trolling the readily triggered, shirking rules, putting a finger up your butt in the shower not because it's a gay thing but you just want to see, etc. That's how you get to PSYCHO.
that is my morning routine described perfectly

I used to love rollercoasters, went to Santa Cruz few months ago and absolutely lost the plot, could barely cope with the sky ride. One of them, I was actually in tears. I couldn't cope with it at all. Absolutely scared witless.

Regular movies are boring. People being murdered by Pinhead, being ripped apart by monsters or possessed by ghosts is infinitely more entertaining than some dumb love story or comedy. Or another war movie

Horror movies don't really do much for me. Don't mind watching them once in a while though.

Yeah I understand your point, yeah I do .
Now I see Clippy mentioned Doom ... I played that too ... and would again if I had more time ...
Strange...

By this line of logic we should only watch documentaries?

Because it's fantasy and fiction brought in an engaging manner, real life horror isn't.
Yeah

Real life horror is finding you the ugly chick you nailed because you need to bust one one and thought it was a cheap lay, turns out to be pregnant

Who me? How'd you know? I haven't even said anything yet? :D

Seriously, though. A love for horror doesn't belong to any particular political ideology. I've known hardcore horror fans from all walks of life, from every political party & from just about every religious background ( although your Evangelicals don't much go in for horror from what I've seen, then again, I don't think they're supposed to watch any movies at all aside from Biblical epics & "inspirational" films ).

Myself, I've been a horror fan from my earliest memories. The very first film that I can recall watching in its entirety was a late-night showing of Mario Bava's BLACK SUNDAY when I was about five-years-old. Even before that, I remember seeing THE MUNSTERS & THE ADDAMS FAMILY on reruns & being enthralled by the spooky atmosphere of their houses. From that point on, I was in love with anything to do with monsters & horror.

And five decades later on down the line & not much has changed. I still love horror films of all kinds.
Why?
Who knows?
I'm sure there's some sort of deep-seated psychological reason buried inside of me somewhere but I've never cared enough to get to the bottom of it. All I know is that I've always enjoyed them & that they're cool as hell. LOL.
Honestly, others have already provided terrific answers to the question before me. So, I'll leave it at that.

Really I'd say horror is like the Metal of cinema, its less a genre and more a world onto itself, espeically during its heyday in the 70's and 80's.

I think its telling that directors like Kubrick, Polanski, Ridley Scott, Nick Roeg and Alan Parker did horror films during their best years, directors who probably would not have been interested in making actions films or comedy yet they saw value in horror.

Fun fact: There was a study showing that fans of horror movies cope better with the pandemic than controls, showing better resilience and preparedness. This would be because, through exposure to frightening scenarios in films, they have a better sense of how to organize for a catastrophic scenario and they practise their emotion-regulation skills.

"The passion caused by the great and sublime in nature, when those causes operate most powerfully, is Astonishment; and astonishment is that state of the soul, in which all its motions are suspended, with some degree of horror."

why do people need dramas? Isn't there enough drama in life? Whey do people need comedies? Isn't there enough laughter in life. Why do people need porn isn't there enough sex in life? Oh, wait, there is no such thing as enough sex.
