why do people keep calling marcelo the greatest?

he isn't and hasn't been for a while.

he is still one of the best at his weight. but the greatest is undisputed by any top black belt-Roger
 
Maybe it's because no one has been more dominant of a grappler than him, if you take into account both gi and no gi titles. Maybe it's because no one his size has been as dominant in the absolute division of Abu Dhabi, or that he has two "Most Technical Grappler" awards. Maybe it's because even with the loss to Popovitch, he looked amazing leading up to that point, before losing the match (which could also be argued).
Is Roger unbeatable right now? It definitely looks like that, but Marcello only competes
at the tournaments that matter and i think people forget how dominant he is. By the way, I love Roger and think he's unbeatable right now. Marcello can't compete with his size (even though everyone was holding their breath when he almost choked Roger out).
 
Marcelo is a badass. I don't care that Roger Gracie beat him because I'm sure if Marcelo was as big as Roger he would have won.

This, Roger is the absolute best, but Marcelo is P4P the best.

That's like saying who is better Karelin or Saitiev.

because he hasn't competed as much and doesn't have as many medals? (I'm talking about Abu Dhabi...by the way, I don't think there's any argument that Roger hasn't been more dominant in the Mundials..I mean, there is NO argument there. He's also 7 inches taller and 60 lbs heavier.

On topic, Marcelo is an absolute beast at his weight and is always in the mix at absolute. His style is exciting to watch (for me) and he has defeated so many top grapplers. I think Roger and Marcelo are in a league of their own.

The only reason people think Roger is better is because he can take his division and the absolute. Marcelo is fighting guys 60+ lbs heavier than him in the absolute division (but then again, that hasn't stopped him before).

Marcelo has been cleaning out his division for years. He's only lost 3 matches in his weight division since 2003.
 
Marcelo is awesome but he's not even #2 or #3 in the world, this thread is crazy
 
Marcelo is the best pound for pound in the world. And he is also one of the nicest people I have ever met.
