Vitor busts on the UFC scene as THE phenom, culminating with him starching Wanderlei in like 10 seconds. Then he goes to Japan with great hype and anticipation in a period of a fighter's career where he really should be developing into his peak. But for pretty much from 1999 to 2007 he becomes a shell of his former self, always gunshy and afraid to pull the trigger. Not only losing fights but just in dreadfully boring fights where hes either not doing anything or trying to win via ground control. he toils as a underachiever this entire period.

Some people say its because of the abduction of his sister but that happened in 2004 I believe, and his career was already slumping before that.

This is really the time where the Old Vitor moniker was born, people wondering where was the guy with the machine gun hands that was just starching folks.

Then he beats Terry Martin in impressive fashion and seemingly his career is rejuvenated. He's still not swarming like the Phenom but he's tactical and aggressive.

But what happened to him between 1999 to 2006? it's one of the greatest mystery of MMA history.

his sister got kidnapped
in 2004, his pride run from 1999 to 2003 was boring as f@ck. He was already gunshy and people were talking about Old Vitor already

i literally address this in the OP...

Maybe he was of the juice during that period for some reason.

This is what happened to him in 1999:

He didn't believe in Cheezus.

styles make fights

he broke his hand in the fight against sakuraba (and sakuraba is a legend)

he lost a fight to chuck (no shame in that)

did you see what he did to eastman

randy/tito/overeem are bad matchups for vitor

OK lets see if there are ANY responses that don't mention steroids or his sister.....

Who knows? The mental game is such a huge part of fighting. He may have been depressed, in an identity crisis, unmotivated..... no one can know.

Neither responses make sense, Old Vitor was gone before his sister was abducted and why would a young man need roids.

the flurry he had on Saku before he broke his hand was literally the last time we saw Old Vitor

Which is why I hold that it was Sakuraba who stole his mojo up until 2004 where his sister's death really put his career into the crapper.

Getting taken down and pounded out by Randy is one thing. But the pain of breaking his hand, along with his utter helplessness for 20 minutes against Sakuraba who used his thighs as a kicking bag must have heavily damaged his fighting spirit for years to come.

His possible gunshyness was becacuse he was afraid of breaking his hand again and getting put in such a humiliating spot like what happened against Sakuraba.

Nobody actually knows to tell you the truth not one single person here knows exactly why

I think his sisters kidnapping was a massive influence on him, but I also think he has evolved into a much better fighter. Perhaps like many talented people, he just cruised for a few years, but his style has changed a lot over the last 8-9 years.

He invented the super move...the concept which was later stolen by Capcom and incorporated into Street Fighter.

Shinku!!!....
