The film is an all-time great. It has an awesome cast led by Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. Amazing score and cinematography. One of the best films ever made. So why did this movie flop? Why is it highly under-appreciated?

People thought it was about Sandra Bullock’s ex-husband.

The name is too long and gives away the ending.

It had a very long post-production phase. Seemed to lose a lot of momentum after filming was done. Real shame because it was a great movie. Was only nominated for 2 Oscars - cinematography and Casey Affleck - but the score should have been nominated as well, and also for Best Picture, possibly Best Director, and possibly Best Supporting for Sam Rockwell too. Pitt wouldn't have been out of place with a Best Actor nomination that year either.

The ultra-cumbersome title probably didn't help matters.

I heard it was a great movie but the title kept me from watching it.

The title really had something in it. Notice why people just cut off "by Robert Ford" when writing

I thought it was good, I liked the way they told the story after Jesse James was killed, how basically he lived the life of a known traitor and you get the sense he deeply regretted killing him

I've argued about this film a lot in Bullit's movie thread. It's just not for me. The pacing is slow as fuck imo. I found the cinematography to be unnecessary and distracting. I don't understand why it's shot in vignettes when it's pretty much a fairly straightforward narrative.

There was another Western that came out around the same time called The Proposition, which I thought was far superior.

Yup. Maybe I'll try to watch it again. Think the last time I saw it was 10 years ago. I'm generally a fan of Westerns.

I watched but took break in between. Not that great of a movie imo. Slow and prolonged. Plus Brad Pitt is sort of one dimensional.
